Week 10 - ITF ($25K) - Puebla, Mexico - Hard, Indoor

May Gabi have as much Mexican fortune as our other players currently there!

QR1: Gabriella TAYLOR (GBR) [q11] 679 vs. Zorayma ARREOLA (MEX) UNR (= CH)
Gabi's opponent is 30, and has only played a total of 19 pro tournaments in her career, all in Mexico. Her only wins have come in QR1 of $10K & $25K on the several occasions when she has come up against another Mexican WC.

Good chance to qualify, as it is a FQR.
Fairly weak draw for a 25k with WR 390 getting in.

Good luck to Gabi.

Nicole has some pretty good wins under her belt.

Interestingly, and in line with what's been said about US players, wildcards, available tournaments, etc., 17 year-old Nicole (born 1998) has basically only played 25ks and 50ks in pro-tennis this year.

In the last 12 months, she's played: 9 x 25k; 6 x 50k; (and 3 x 10k)

Nearly all via qualifying and all (until this month) in the US......

And no junior tennis since 2014.

FQR: (q11) Gabi Taylor WR 679 beat (q5) Nicole Frenkel (USA) WR 476 (CH 419 21/09/15), aged 17 5-7 6-3 6-0

R1: (Q) Gabi Taylor WR 661 vs (Q) Harmony Tan (FRA) WR 592 (CH 380 02/02/15), aged 18

There appears to have been a bit of a botched job of an original R1 draw in which Gabi was down to meet the unseeded Elitza Kostova (BUL). Slight problem in that Kostova, on ranking, should be seeded 7. She has her seeding in the redraw ( and could now be a R2 opponent for Gabi ) with the original seed 7 now seed 8 and the original seed 8 now unseeded. Looks to have maybe come out well for Gabi - though I know nout about Tan beyond these numbers.

All the best to her, may she too have a good week in Mexico.

Edit: R1 now shows this week's rankings.

Definitely winnable. Tan is a reasonable 10k player, but nothing special.

I don't think you can call an 18 year-old just a 'reasonable 10k player' - to me, that's a tag for a 23 year-old or so.

Harmony's been as high as WTA 380 already, last year, which is not bad given she was a junior!

And, in fact, she played very few 10ks last year, mostly higher ones.

That said, I'm not a particular fan either and I agree it's winnable.

She played at the Wirral and had to retire - don't know why. Hasn't played since then. Although came through qualis seemingly very easily.

Oh by the way - Gabbi turns 18 today, so this will be a nice little present(assuming she wins) - leading 6-1 2*-3

One set all. Lost the second set 4-6

Not balloon time yet.....

From livescores, Gabi seemed in control of that second set - was a break up at 4-3 - but either she tightened up or, with nothing to lose, Harmony upped the tempo (or both) but Gabi suddenly lost the second set 4-6.....

Into the third .....

Maybe she's getting tired as the match goes on. Only just returning to competitive tennis after injury
