Boys: Yeltsin Cup, Russia, hard - Grade 1 (Week 8)

Ryan Storrie and Alexis Canter have made it to Kazan to tackle a field unsurprisingly dominated by Russian entries.

Boys R1 (L64)

(9) Ryan James Storrie bye

(6) Alexis Canter bye

Alexis enjoys a trek to distant lands doesn't he? Costa Rica, India, Ukraine, Tunisia, now Russia. When I was his age I'd barely even made it as far as France...

(6) Alexis Canter v Sergei Pogosian (RUS)

Well done, Ryan. Alexis' score is not up yet.

R2: (9) Ryan James Storrie def. (WC) Nikita Valentsev (RUS) 7-6(5) 6-1

Not sure 100% but I heard that Ryan is again off traveling on his own.

Now, it's huge credit to him to be able to do that, and to his parents for having the trust to allow him to (must have been well brought up, that lad) but I can't think that there's any other reasonable tennis nation where a top-100 junior is traveling to play a Grade 1 event, in Russia, completely on his own.

LTA - what ARE you doing???????????

Straightforward for Alexis, but both need to win against stronger players tomorrow to earn useful points.

(6) Alexis Canter d. Sergei Pogosian (RUS) 6-1 6-2

(6) Alexis Canter v (10) Alexander Ovcharov (RUS)

Not 100% sure I'm reading the page correctly (I assume the player on top is the player with the first score, i.e. on the left - really think whoever designed that page could do a BETTER job) but:

Ryan 3-3 (he was a break up previously)

Alexis 4-1

Congratulations to Ryan for getting himself there. It says a lot about his aspirations and what he is prepared to do to reach them. It is also consistent with the barriers he/his family have overcome to facilitate his development I the past. Having spent a significant amount on the development of OG, every opportunity the LTA can facilitate for Ryan appears excellent value. Good luck to him.

Ryan will have a new CH when the ranking come out, with singles and doubles points to potentially add. Should be around 72 in live rankings

So Alexis will also have a new CH, climbing to mid 50's with more potential points to be earned this week

Brilliant !

Alexis has 50 points coming off in two weeks time (and then nothing else for months) so that will cover that nicely.

Ryan's big points 'loss' is not till May (nothing before) so he'll get the benefit more, points-wise.

Of course, they might both go on and add lots more !

Great job by both of them smile
