At least this suggests that Mr Ward's loss to the same player is not as great an issue as might have been thought. Both of our players can move on - and I hope that, having knocked out both Brits, Mr Skugor does well in the main tournament.

Indeed. And both Mr Ward (7) and Mr Edmund (6) took more games from him. Indeed, Mr Ward has taken more games from him than anyone else this week thus far. His next opponent (Mr Wawrinka or Mr Stakhovsky) may, however, better that record.
Poor old Dubai. First they have an injury-wracked draw with the women ... and now Djokovic is out, having fought but lost against an eye infection. So their SFs are Messrs Wawrinka, Kyrgios, Baghdatis and Lopez (F). Could be a lot worse - they're all good players. But you do feel for the organisers. And in the doubles, there are no seeds left: indeed, Jonny Marray's conquerors in qualifying, Vesely and Chung, are in the SFs too.
