Week 7 - ITF ($25K) - Surprise, USA Hard

If Laura is playing 9 months of 25Ks something is very awry.

Of course, different players return at different paces and there are all sorts of different circunstances such as mentioned the sheer drive and possibly say Laura's scar tissue issues.

But long time as she has been out, Laura has huge inherent ability which she can't be finding from scratch again. As Phil says it would be interesting to know what the main problems are. I am not really bothered about PRs running out, but Laura much more fundamentally finding a level again and then like all very good players ( youngsters, returnees, whoever ) if the ability is there and the game in place a fast rise up the rankings should be no great issue. The ranking system does not hold back the really good.

But first she needs her game in much better order.

Laura's (super, hyper? mega?) agent; and Sharapova's, amongst others.
Of whom I broadly agree with AliBlahBlah.
He's a good agent, which, oxymoron aside, means he divests himself of dead weight quickly and without sentiment.
If he's still in Laura's corner then that's a definite positive, one which I take to speak for her dedication and application despite, admittedly, some occasional ostensible indications that can be, and very often are, interpreted to the contrary.

I have never understood why Ms Robson's blogging, tweeting, etc was taken as an indication that she isn't dedicated and hardworking. To the contrary, she's done an extraordinary job of maintaining her equilibrium through a very difficult period - and keeping herself marketable.

And she can take consolation. The woman tennis player who was most frequently told that she wasn't living up to her talent or applying herself sufficiently because she had too many outside interests has done reasonably well for herself in the past few years.

I haven't seen any streams or videos of Laura's recent matches so it is hard to judge what is limiting her at present. She used to play a very aggressive game, just as effective against top 100 players as against level 500 players. However that style of play entails many winners and many unforced errors. She would win matches by producing more winners than unforced errors but unforced errors lose points against level 500 players just as well as against top 100 players. So it may simply be that she is still trying to play the game that took her to 27 in the world but not yet consistently enough to win matches.
