RE: Week 7 - ITF ($25K) - Perth(2), Australia (Hard)

or alternatively, full-hearted congrats to Freya as:

75% first serve is very good (after all, who cares about second serves if you get practically all your first serves in?)

And 68% of those first serves were points won.

Far better than her top-200 opponent's 64% and 47%

I expect she got a bit nervous towards the end - although I also expect that her opponent loosened up and went for it a bit more, when she was 2-5 down, as is often the case and one of the reasons it's difficult to close out matches (i.e. not always the yips, often due to the opponent). Difficult to know without being there.

I expect you have a point about her second serve - but just wanted to present the 'alternative' version of events

Well full-hearted congratulations from me!!!  Freya is 18yo, hardly a seasoned competitor at 25K level and has just taken out the second seed, probably a career high scalp!  She'd be Wonder Woman if she didn't have a few wobbly moments along the way.....but she came through them.  Full marks I'd say.

Freya to me is someone with lots of upside potential and there's very few players that don't tense up a bit at the finish, the important thing is that you still get it done. Freya has a huge 1st serve, but 2nd serve clearly is vulnerable at times, a bit to work on there, but I'd still say progressing very nicely, thank you very much.

Fantastic win by Freya. Not quite a career best scalp (Smitková WR 170, Nottingham 2014) but without checking, I think it may well be only her 2nd win against a top 200 player. Not an easy draw is it - 2nd seed then Rodionova (albeit the lower-ranked one) in R2!

Great win. Freya is one i think that will close the gap on the big 3. I think her and Katie Swan will make the jump.

That's a real shame.

I still have a, now growing, concern about her stats on second serve. She won only 1 point on second serve in the second two sets; compared to winning 60+% of second serve points in FQR. The most likely explanation seems to me that she's having to take a lot off it, to nurse an injury. I hope not. That could really put the dampeners on what I was hoping to be a very successful trip.

Anyway, she was broken 4 times in the third set; so it's a serve issue.

Not to argue the proverbial (well, maybe a bit )

But anyone who loses 6-1 in the third set - or any set - has been broken 4 times (at least) and that doesn't automatically mean it's a serve issue.

They could have cramp, heat stroke etc. Or the other player (who had gone AWOL the set before) suddenly sparks back to life and gets their act together again. Or they could be tired and going for broke to shorten the points and just missing.

And if she were nursing an injury (that affects serve), then normally her first serve stats would be a lot worse too. You don't use your shoulder/body differently for a second serve over a first serve (unless you have the most huge amount of top spin on your second).

And you quote Freya's second serve stat.

But look at Arina's for the third set. She won 0% of her second serves. (Admittedly, she only served 4. Hence my point about who cares about second serves if you get enough first ones in).

I honestly don't think those stats tell us anything very useful.

A very women's tennis scoreline!!  Arina R is no mug on a tennis court, so well done Freya for making it 3 sets.

Edit: damn autocorrect !!
