Has anyone got any news with regards Naomi's absence from Surbiton and now Ilkley/Birmingham? I am assuming that her lack of form meant that Boulter got her Wild Card for Birmingham and of course she was still involved in Doubles at Manchester so couldn't play qualifying. I have just checked the Ilkley draw and no signs of her in singles or doubles. I couldn't imagine the LTA would pic Lumsden for a Wild Card and leave Naomi out completely.
I would imagine she is guarding an injury and saving herself for other tournaments possibly.
Just switched on the Stuttgart tennis before the Spurs match starts and is that Naomi commentating with Sam Smith? Certainly sounds like her - her commentating skills have been well documented on here in recent months.
I see she is in Gifu 80k quals next week and has made the main draw of Fukuoka 60k the week after, possibly Kurume 60k the following week (although we won't find out about that until Thursday), so it is absolutely imperative she records some good results, if she wants to stay anywhere near her current ranking of circa 300.
Naomi Broady on twitter (and instagram) @NaomiBroady It feels so good to be back!
After 9 weeks away from the court, I'm finally allowed to start hitting some balls. No movement allowed yet but I'm slowly getting there. It's been the longest time I've been away from tennis since I first picked up a racket at 7 years old so it's good to know I haven't entirely forgotten everything!
When I saw this thread had been updated, I was expecting to discover that Naomi had retired.
Her results last season were a lot worse than previous years so an injury might go some way towards explaining her form.
Also her confidence seems quite fragile. After the peak prior to Fitzy joining, she had a terrible run of form, then her best sustained run came immediately after she'd rediscovered some form, early in the new coaching partnership.
Naomi's a frustrating player. It felt to me as though firing Fitzy did a huge amount of damage. Only time she looked a genuine WTA tournament standard player and she was still learning what worked at that level, the speed of the courts etc.
Too often she doesn't appear to play to her strengths. Makes strange choices on serve, rarely aggressive enough on 2nd.
Anyway, perhaps there is another peak to come.

Kundalini's right, Fitzy was the only one who tried to take on Naomi's game. His strategy was to play to her strengths (make her serve and forehand better) and mitigate her weaknesses. He required her to adapt her game (as we all want her to do), and it was the only time she tried seriously. Naomi may have been worried about the expense, but she dispensed of his services too quickly I believe, and she has never looked like regaining anything like the form and ranking status she had then.
Can she do it again now? No, in my book. Even if she's willing, such is her game she needs a good coach. I'm happy therefore she's a good commentator as it gives her another option. Good luck to her trying again but it's a very long way back now.
