RE: Week 6 - ITF ($10K) - Sunderland, UK Hard

Just the three more wins required this week ( ie reaching the final ) to get Katie B a ranking again on 11 points ( 16 if she won the title ) AND back onto the top 25 table.

I don't think you can be tough on Katie S, she clearly was very tired from her exploits last week, very difficult to come from making your FedCup debut and giving all you have (mentally and physically) on Saturday to coming straight to Sunderland a totally different enviroment and being at the same level. You'd be inhuman if you didn't have a semi letdown from such a high, and as her coach rightly pointed out the most important fact was that she won at the end of the day. There were still glimpses of brilliance when she stepped it up. Again one shot at the net showed her great hands ( a delicate drop volley similar to last week ) and if she can recharge her batteries sufficiently she's still going to have a big say as to where this title goes this week. I think the leg issue is very minor, and it is far more about mental and physical fatigue. I gather she is going to still play a fair amount of juniors this year, certainly the FO is on the cards.

I agree with Jaffa that Katie B played a solid match, started slowly but found top gear pretty quickly, and as Jezza Bates pointed out only lacking match fitness, now that her back issues are behind her.

As for Katy D, didn't catch much of her match, but clearly she'll have a big say this week, and I won't tell you what she said when she found out the Sunderland uni lads were interested to interview her and what she might tell them, suffice to say it was A typical Katy and she'll always crack you up.

I actually think Katie has shown one of her main strengths in this performance - mental toughness. I must admit myself, after she lost that tie-break it wasn't looking good because the second serve was losing her too many points and I thought she was going to lose. She was able to recover the situation quickly and then turn it around in a matter of minutes, despite what now appears to be a thankfully very minor injury. For a 16 year old player to do that time after time, because she has had several closely fought matches is impressive. Of course, watching live gives more of an idea than making assumptions by stats. :P

I would agree too - Katie continues to impress me with her mental toughness and for a 16 year old it is a real strength in her game.

Thanks to philwrig & Jaffa for more valuable reportage and opinion from the scene.
One could get quite used to being spoiled like this!

As I've said time and time again, Katie S has no weaknesses and several strengths, it would have been so easy to let this match slip after losing the 2nd having served for it, she was actually a little unlucky in the TB, and being fatigued, but she fought through it, and it is great credit to her that she managed to do it.

Yes. I think the forum should do a whip round to fund them as resident roving reporters smile Shouldn't be too much to cover a bus ticket and a bag of crisps !

Cheers, guys.
