Katie did well to refocus there. She isn't fully fit and has a problem with her left leg. In the game 0-40 down she hit a ball definitely out but the other girl stopped and Katie won the next 4 points to hold, and that was the turning point. Deserved to win but a bit flat, needs to move her feet more on the forehand return!

A shame to hear that Katie has an injury, hopefully fairly minor otherwise she probably shouldn't be playing this event. Not that surprising as I'm sure she pushed herself really hard at Fed Cup.

Emily Appleton only really came to my attention towards the end of last year. Is she looking like a future prospect to any with more knowledge of her?

From what I saw last week a nice all round game with a good temperament. That seems to tie in with other things I have read.

She is currently still at scool and apparently doing very well and I don't know how much time she gets on her game.

The basics are very much there I'd say, but it is a game that would need to develop a lot more oomph, particular strengths. And that may very well come. Too early days, I'd think, to be particularly definitive.

My expectation is that she follows the US college route - simply because she has such good grades and that, given her father was/is in tennis and an ex-pro (did three years on the tour before quitting and going to Cambridge university), he will know how hard (and often unnecessary) it is to get started young.

She is 16 years old with a recent junior career high of 243. I originally included Emily in my top 10 list but then decided she would be unlikely to play enough pro circuit matches in the coming year but her results certainly look encouraging.

She was on the entry list of the $50k in Switzerland next week and was likely to get into qualifying until she withdrew. Maybe as a precaution if she is carrying an injury.

Good call, Indy, on Mia Eklund who put out Jodie yesterday and has now beaten Touly, WR 570-ish

I note that Emilie Francati, friend and dubs partner of Em Arb, has also carried on well, as expected, having beaten Beth yesterday and now beaten the WR 600-ish player, Sarrazin.

(The French, in fact, have had a pretty dire day here today - with only their no. 1 seed winning, and a victory from an all-French match (which doesn't count), and three losses to lower ranked players)

Elsewhere in the world today in the ITF, every single French lady that could win a singles, did so (only losses were in FRA vs. FRA).
So, I don't feel too bad about it

The main draw is a bit disappointing pitting two all GB matches and potentially more depending on qualifying places.

Katy set to meet Katie B with Katie S waiting in the semis.
I expect Maia to have a decent run again this week. Given Harriet's poor run of results, Maia should be a clear favourite to win the opener.

CD called Harriet's match wrongly, bookies had the match fairly even and I even had Maia to win(not that I bet much on tennis) and made a few quid.

Don't worry, insomniac, I don't cry into my cornflakes when French tennis has a bad day - they've got enough good days to go round !

Shame for Harriet. As said, I had hoped she would get the win, she certainly needs it, and has the tennis but obviously Maia is hard to beat, and playing well now, and bravo to her (and the Smith clan behind her!)

Well done to Emily App who obviously had the nicest Q draw - although all the Qs have done pretty well today. Lovely way to wrap up the third set.

Add: just crossed with paulisi's and, yes, as above, am sad that harriet couldn't do it (although very pleased for Maia). Didn't lose anything on it though and am glad you made a few quid.
