Very nice win for Mr Oakley. And I look forward to the day when Mr Bambridge goes on a streak of winning those oh-so-close matches. Rest all fairly much with rankings, barring Mr Smethurst's loss.
Finally had chance to get something written up about what I saw today:
First of all, Evan v Jay Clarke. First time I've seen Evan but my word I was very very impressed with him today. He serves big and is solid off both wings. Jay didn't actually play too badly but Evan was just too good. Felt Jay needs to fill out a bit but that will come.
Ryan Storrie v Teixera. Ryan has a nice game, better than Alexis and (on today's performance) Jay as well but the Frenchman was the best player I saw today I would say. It's a shame Evan has to play him tomorrow really but you never know!
Bambo v Barry. Bambo should have won the first set obviously but to be fair Barry played excellent points set point down in the first each time. Both players' serves are big and it was a true exhibition of serving (which I enjoyed because generally it was like watching one of my matches!!)
Luke Oakley v the Iti - Luke has a good game and played beyond his years in my opinion, especially mentally. However I don't think the Italian didn't really want to be there. I'll be very interested to see how he gets on tomorrow but I suspect he may well be brought back to earth unfortunately.
Smethy didn't get going at all and was flat throughout, the Italian actually had a nice game and played well despite being 'unheard of' and had a lot of joy slicing to Smethy's backhand. When Dan got the second I think most people felt he was going to go on and win but he lost his serve immediately in the decider and couldn't get back in it.
JWH.... what can I say, he played so well for a set and a half but mentally was absolutely in the shed when he got broken after breaking for 4-3. I was surprised it went to a breaker to be fair but as soon as he lost that the racket went and there was only one winner.
Sapwell was destroyed by an American guy that is definitely going places. Josh looked like he needed a rest though, he's played a lot of matches the last few weeks if you include the British Tour.
Oooh nearly forgot... Lloyd Glasspool v Rice. First set was quite tight but Dave was dispirited after a let cord in Lloyd's favour in the breaker and there was only one winner from there. That said Dave had 2 set points against Lloyd's serve in the first and missed an open court forehand that would've won him the set. Like Lloyd's game though, you can tell he's friends with Evo though, always chuntering away to himself at the back of the court and at times it wasn't helpful.
Toby was well in it in the first and a lot of games went to deuce but as I have said I always felt Napolitano was going to have too much for him.
Rosenholm v Griekspoor was a good match also that went to two breakers, Lloyd will fancy his chances against Rosenholm though.
Didn't really watch Richard Gabb or Pauffers because I was more interested in the Bambo and Hoyt matches.
Had to come away before the doubles.
Will try to get up there again tomorrow! Must say they do an ok job at Sunderland there and I'd recommend a visit, you're high above the players but it's a good view.
Looking forward to seeing the ladies and then the R16 matches.
I have only seen Evan play once and that was a "training" set against Oli Golding a couple of years ago. Oli was ranked in the 400s at the time and although he won, Evan didn-t look out of place even then. He has come a long way in the last 12 months since recovering from serious back injuries so I am really looking forward to watching his progress this season.
Evan keeping in it with teixera. Had a BP at 0-1 and thought he'd cleaned the line but it was definitely wide. Went mental with the umpire. Fashioned another but Maxime played a great point.
Sam Barry on the next court across is great entertainment, lots of deuces and the swede is really getting under the umpires skin
