Emily is a strange one - looked very comfortable against an average Turk in Shrewsbury, but her Mum said she didn't know what to expect as she blows hot and cold.
Lot of seeds have gone - 1,4,7 so far with a couple still to play. The top half of the draw with Maia and Manisha looks wide open for whoever wants to take their opportunity.
With all the family benefits that Emily App gets, it obviously helps.
But I think her family are doing an amazing job.
The one thing that (for me) stuck out about her when I saw her last year was not her tennis as such (seemed pretty good, all round, but not amazing) but the fact that she really seemed to enjoy her tennis.
She was certainly trying, but played as though it was fun, without 'suffering' out there and beating herself up over every missed shot or indulging in amateur dramatics.
I thought that her coaches (her Dad?) were doing very well - it's important and not that common (there are a lot of juniors, and a couple of British ones in particular, who look as though every shot is killing them and tennis is like an albatross around their necks). And when I heard she got 10 A*s at GCSE, I was even more impressed.
It's great to see Katie B back after an elongated stint on the sidelines. And a nice result too! Just what was needed to get that winning feeling back, albeit against a Brit.
A special congratulations to Maia too, that is an excellent result.
