I really like Naomi's chances of making the final here. Shelby is a nice player but even before the recent hot streak I would have said Naomi has too much for her to handle. This could be a very big week for her and with Liam going well in Glasgow we might even get a Broady double.

In a 100K, 16 year-old Cici Bellis beat the 2nd seed, WR 68
Alex Sandford, age 17, made it through to the QFs and very nearly the SFs (Alex was the girl Katie just pipped in the junior event at the back end of last year)
17 year-old new up-and-coming star (who made the final of the 50k last week), Raveena Kingsley, beat the WTA WR 120 ...
Interesting, thanks CD. Very good bunch of American youngsters. But I reckon our Katie will continue to hold her own over time against them, many of course who she knows very well.
Some very good prospects indeed in the US. Raveena Kingsley was, as noted in the university thread, down to go to university next year. But her performances this year have been exceptional - one wonders what will happen next.
According to Zootennis, Ingrid Neel (17) and Cici Bellis (16) have also made the SFs in the doubles.

It's a very exciting time for them.
Raveena Kingsley should have put Shelby away in comfortable straight sets. At a set and *4-1 up. But she then became very passive, stopped using the court and moving Shelby around, who took heart and with more time, started to hit out with enough success to prevail. CiCi was good against 2 seed Maria, though Maria was very random. Bellis & Neel completely outfoxed the experience of Fichman/Crawford in their doubles. Anderson/Sandford yesterday was one of those where both players never played well at the same time in the match. In the end, Anderson outlasted Sandford more than anything, closing on 3 hours. Current NCAA singles champ, Jamie Loeb, and Louisa Chirico also impressed. Chirico should have beaten Hibi Mayo easily, she was great for a set and 2/3, and Loeb seemed to have Falconi's number last night until Falconi stated doing that junk balling thing she does, and that seemed to flummox Loeb. Lots of young American promise on show this week; based on the covered matches in Midland, most need work on snuffing matches completely out. Anderson & Loeb the picks from their Midland showing.
