Remember all those matches Naomi was losing from winning positions and we couldn't work out why? Today sort of explains it. When she needed the serve and the consistency it just wasnt there. Shame as she played some superb tennis is patches.
McHale closes it out to love with a cross court FH winner.
Well, that one got away.
I suppose it's positive that against a seasoned top 100 player (and CH WR 29) we now expect Naomi to win some of these matches rather than hoping against hope.
Rather disappointing end nonetheless.
GSM McHale 6-3 6-7(5) 4-6
Amazing it was so close given that Naomi served poorly (perhaps due to the conditions), and made a lot of errors. I would have expected Naomi to struggle against a decent top 100 player in slow conditions so I'm not quite sure what to think really. It was an ugly match to say the least; perhaps the conditions were more difficult than it appeared, otherwise hard to explain why neither player looked remotely convincing.
Maybe Naomi Broady can contact Kontas mental coach. She surely needs to after twice failing to serve the match out and then crumbling from 40-0 in the 9th game of the final set.
A missed opportunity given the opponent waiting in the final. Her ground strokes were better today but it seems its difficult to get her to play a match with both that and her serve in good working order.
She still needs to work on her movement which is poor and needs to stop throwing matches away as she'll find it a struggle to get into the top 100 and stay there.
Still worthwhile remembering that 9 months ago she was ranked 200+. A lot of progress has been made since then and, if she can get her game fully together, she will be a match for most top players.
Certainly one that could / should have been won against a still underpar McHale.
She did find much more consistency latterly last year, particularly on serve, and of course started well this year, but consistent consistency ( if you know what I mean ) may for now at least frustratingly elude her.
Still, as folk have said great progress overall. And with only 36 points to defend from two 18s ( 20 net ) before June she should certainly be in the top 100 before too long.
