Is it any consolation that the 16 year-old Aussie has just beaten the WR 302 second seed? and the 17 year-old Norwegian has just beaten the WR 405 fifth seed? (of course, they'll probably both make the finals, and then withdraw next week, being tired !!! Which would just about be the straw that broke the camel's back......)

No consolation at all. I will go down and give Billy some support over the weekend qualies, but then to cheer myself up, I have signed up the some tennis at La Manga next week instead. The only slightly promising news is that Alex hasn't yet withdrawn from Cartagena the following week - yet.
Laura D will almost certainly get in directly, so there should be three wildcards to distribute and Emily Arb might sneak in as well if the SE's don't get used
The only SE at Sunderland could go to Maia if she got to the final on Sunday, as qualifying start for Wirral on sunday.(everyone else is already in main draw)
So potential to have 5 GB in the main draw, plus 4 wildcards and however many qualify
The men's event at Shrewsbury is pretty loaded with Brits as well - 9 in the main draw(several seeded), 4 wildcards plus however many qualify
KB was down for an odd schedule - Week 7 Sharm, 8 nowhere, 9 Sharm. Better off delaying the trip until Week9; hopefully with a shiny new WTA ranking tucked away in her hand luggage.
News doesn't sound good. Spoke briefly to Billy. The match in which Alex retired last week, he was playing with his forearm heavily strapped. I am fearing the worst.

Oh, no
That's just horrible (assuming it's true and yet another stress fracture)
Praying that it's something different and relatively benign . . . .
James Allemby is down to play a bit later. I think he knows Alex much better than Billy as he trains at the same academy. I will try and get more info from him.
Just chatted. Briefly with Alex's coach. They think the problem is just muscular this time and not a repeat of the stress fracture. Hopefully not too serious. Will try and talk more to him later.
