Weeks 3-4 - Australian Open Women's Doubles

Jossanna take the early lead, 4-1*
and comfortably and deservedly take the first set, 6-2

They look transformed from Hobart, sharper.
Lots of missed volleys on the other side of the net.

Second set, much as the first, Jo looking a little tired, Heather perhaps trying a bit too hard, Jossanna solid.
6-2 *5-3

Joss serving for the match first MP was a DF, now on third MP... Hev puts a FH long moving in to the net, and that's that.
Better team won, and the scoreline was at least an accurate reflection - the old equation of a doubles team against two singles players on a doubles court.
Well done Jossanna

GSM Rae/Smith 6-2 6-3

I only watched the last game or two, but was impressed by Jos and Anna. Well done.

Shows how little I know. Joss and Anna looked so much sharper than they did in their first round match, especially Anna who was a completely different player. On the flip side of that, Heather looked less than a fraction of the player she was in her first round match.

Oddly, it was the last couple of games where I thought Jo and Heather started to look alive.

Who'd have thought a year ago, the only member of the Fed Cup team not to be going into the 2nd week of the Australian Open would be Heather!!

Incidentally, this result is probably the best possible result for Judy. It takes off the pressure for forcing Heather and Jo to play two matches in a tie at the Fed Cup, because she can now confidently see that Joss and Anna are probably the better doubles team when push comes to shove... (having said that, I'm still not convinced that Heather and Jo wouldn't beat them more handily on a different day. Heather's returns were all over the place today)

R2: Johanna KONTA/Heather WATSON (GBR/GBR) 229 lost to Jocelyn RAE/Anna SMITH (GBR/GBR) 160 6-2 6-3

The feisty and formidable Chan sisters next; a really stern test.
R3: Jocelyn RAE/Anna SMITH (GBR/GBR) 160 vs. Hao-Ching CHAN/Yung-Jan CHAN [2] 19

Yes, I think both those statements are probably true.

Happy for Joss and Anna, but slightly surprised.

Should put them into the mid 60's and guarantee them a few more tour entries and the associated prize money.

They won't be expected to win the next round, but the pressure is off and the confidence is coming back so who knows.

Presumably they will also have the benefit of Louis Cayer coaching for a while in prep for the Fed Cup.

Incidentally it looks like Judy Murray has just nicknamed Joss and Anna - Big bird and baby bird....

Surprised by that score-line I have to say; great, though, for Jossanna in terms of confidence (and covering the costs) for the rest of the year ahead. R3 looks daunting but hopefully they'll perform well and go into Fed Cup buoyed up :)

She's been calling them that for ages.

I think it's lovely.

Congratulations to Joss and Anna.

Probably the best result for all involved - Joss and Anna look like they have hit some form just at the right time, and they need the prize money. Jo can have a well deserved rest and concentrate on the singles, given the opportunity there she probably doesn't need the distraction of the doubles, Heather can get some rest and hopefully sort out her abdominal strain, and Judy Murray now has an easy decision to make for the Fed cup.

I was also a bit surprised by the result - but overall a net positive I think as Grand Slam wins are vital to Joss & Anna in their career whereas JoKo in particular has bigger concerns this week. Also secures them in the Fed Cup team.

Hopefully this week's run will be enough to restore the confidence that Joss and Anna had clearly lost in recent months.

Probably just what Joss and Anna needed. Hopefully things are back on track now.
