Jo earns a break/set point and takes it Jo 6-2.
Zheng is faster round the court than Venus so Jo is having to work harder for the points but her backhand is a real weapon, it's powerful and accurately angled.
Johanna did really well in that set.
Zheng had frequent and considerable pressure on Jo's serve and plenty of BP's, but it was all seen off by good hitting and calm play. Then Jo closed out her own chances to break, in contrast to the Chinese.
Generally Jo forced Zheng pretty deep behind the baseline in most rallies with good consistent groundstrokes.
Good set.
Zheng is trying a new tactic of coming to the net. Zheng twice at the net (1-1), Jo three times (2-1). Jo holds 1-0*
Zheng at the net again but volleys out for break point to Jo. Jo at the net volleys out. A good short angled forehand earns another break point. Jo sets up a winner but volleys out. Jo played a week volley and Zheng holds. Jo *1-1
Jo holds to love with good serves and powerful follow-ups. Jo 2-1*
A good exchange with both players swapping volleys at the net goes to Jo. Jo earns two break points and takes the 1st. Jo *3-1
A brilliant angled forehand pass on the run gives Jo three game points. Jo takes it to love. Jo 4-1*
Jo earns two more break points, hits long on the 1st but takes the 2nd with some excellent play spreading Zheng around the court. Jo *5-1
A DF start from Jo. Are we going to get another end of set hiccup from Jo? Jo 0-40. Jo loses the game to love after aggressive hitting from Zheng. Jo 5-2*.
Zheng goes 40-0 up but her drop shot is angled away by Jo. Zheng holds. Jo *5-3
Jo losing focus goes 15-30 down but a very good serve brings it back to level and another good serve sets up match point. Jo takes it 6-3.
Not sure about the tactic to go a set and 5-1 up and then sleep for two games, same as against Venus.
Apart from that though, that was really good.
Kept her opponent moving from side to side, ground strokes good on both wings, some superb winners and generally just high level quality attacking tennis.
Very enjoyable and very satisfying.
Well done again Jo, the late 2015 model is back in town
R3: Johanna Konta WR 47 vs Denisa Allertova (CZE) WR 66 (CH 57 09/15)
22 yo Denisa Allertova beat (30) Sabine Lisicki 6-3 2-6 6-4 to make her first Grand Slam R3, having been beaten in R2 in all Grand Slams last year including the French Open where she beat Jo in three sets in R1.
I saw the second set and was very impressed, bar the failure to serve it out again, which is a worry.
When Jo serves well, she is very difficult to beat. Her groundstrokes are excellent and she seems to have added a new dimension in approaching the net at times as well.
The draw is wide open. No reason why she shouldn't get past Allertova. Pliskova likely to be next and Keys after that.
Expect Jo to be seeded for Paris and Wimbledon now.
