RE: Australian Open 2016 - Main Draw - Melbourne, Australia - Hard

Jo has now won more points this AO than our GB #2 has in total, though not quite in net points gained.
AO SF: 780 pts
Jo net for AO: 780 - 9 (her 17th counter) = 771 pts
Heather's total after AO: 774 pts

Oh! and Jo also 4th in the live 'Race to Singapore' rankings too

Kerber 1/3 - Jo 5/2 - according to William Hill

As fantastic as this run has been, I'm looking forward to see what she can do on the WTA main tour with direct entry into all the big events now.

The semi-final should be another really interesting match, though far from ideal scheduling from a UK viewing perspective.

I think Kerber was about the same age as Jo is now when she had her breakthrough run to the US Open semis which was at the time probably even more unexpected - if Jo can emulate Kerber's career from that point I'll be very happy.

Jo has been so composed throughout the tournament and with the QF being a relatively short match I am quite confident she will play to a good level. I think it will all depend on Kerber - if she plays like she did against Azarenka she will win but if she is a bit flat the day after such a big win jo has every chance.

Jo will now be up to WR28.
She will have 1869 points, which, interestingly, is 184 more than Laura had when she reached WR27 for that one week in 2013. The rankings have change slightly, but that's a big margin.

And, there's probably 50 or so other stats to update of some sort, but it will have to wait for things to settle from the euphoria, and at least until after Andy joins Jo in the semis.
Jo really making Andy work hard to maintain his long run as always last Brit standing at a GS.

Magnificent Johanna, just magnificent

Very interesting so Jo is our 'recent'  highest rankings points scorer, although more general focus will be on the rankings placement, still short of Laura's CH 27. Just have to win another round or two  biggrin

I'm not really that surprised by the 'anomaly'. While all things being equal and all that you'ed generally expect ranking points and position to stay roughly equivalent with as you say only 'slight' ranking points changes, it does come down to just how the rankings pretty randomly cluster and where the gaps are in any week.

e.g. in the current official rankings, there is a big 265 point gap between WR 25 Andrea Petkovic and WR 26 Sloane Stephens. So if Sloane Stephens in general isolation had picked up another 300 points, you'ed have the points forWR  25 relatively much higher.

Seeing Laura and Kerber mentioned in (nearly) consecutive posts reminds me of Laura beating Kerber at Wimbledon 2011; the Fates have been capricious, it seems, with Kerber now comfortably inside the top 10 and Laura denied that (at #27 she was surely well on course until injury intervened). As Mervatron mentions on another thread, if she stays healthy Laura could be back in these echelons by 2018; we can but hope :)

Anyone up for this tonight? Looks like it'll be on shortly. Serena and Radwanska are currently engaged in a thriller. 16 minutes for Serena to lead *5-0

Makes a mockery of equal pay at Slams really this sort of whitewash in a semi final

What has one player's huge superiority over another got to do with equal pay? Would women be more entitled to equal pay if Serena was less good?

Incidentally, I think Konta would now be seeded for Roland Garros even if she doesn't win another match before then.

Lol, please....

Radwanska is getting paid as much for this "match" as Novak will get paid for losing to Roger later wink

If I remember rightly, the roof was closed during Jamie's doubles match and just reopened now for Jo's match. So yes, was closed for the first semi
