Australian Open 2016 - Main Draw - Melbourne, Australia - Hard

R1: Heather WATSON (GBR) 53* vs. Timea BABOS (HUN) 59 (=CH first set 08/2012)
H2H 3-1
2013 Fed Cup, Israel, Hard, HW won 6-3 6-2
2013 Pattaya City, Thailand, WTA International, Hard, R32, HW [8], HW won 6-1 3-0 RET
2014 Prague, Czech Republic, $100K+H, Clay, SF, HW won 7-6(3) 6-3
2015 Cincinatti, USA, Premier 5, Hard, QR1, HW [q17], TB won 6-2 1-6 6-3

  • Babos in something of a renaissance.
  • Likely Bencic in R2 for the winner

* will change considerably before match is played

R1: Johanna KONTA (GBR) 49 vs. Venus WILLIAMS (USA) 10 [8]
H2H 0-1
2015 Wuhan, China, Premier 5, Hard, QF, JK (Q), VW won 6-4 3-6 7-5

  • Erm, tough draw
  • Witthoeft/Zheng would be a favourable R2

Yes, Babos started the year well. Certainly well winnable for Heather, but many preferable draws.

Just don't like Jo's draw, both being Venus and Jo short of matches going in, though of course be interesting to see what transpires.

Just to note Bencic had to retire today.
I think the draw looks a real good one for Hev.

Fancy Heather's draw more than Jo's.
Good luck to both :)

Heather (following 2 mens and one ladies match) is scheduled 4th after 22:00 UK time, on court 8
Which probably means, unless there's a rain delay or marathon match, dead in the middle of the night

None of the matches before Heather's looks straight forward. Fingers crossed it'll be at a reasonable time.

Heather is actually on 4th after midnight GMT which improves further the chances of it not being in the middle of the night for us

Winnable for Hev but tough.

Jo. Not looking like a good tour down under unless she springs a surprise

Yes, if she wasn't going to be first match on, then last on court is the next best option as it could easily be 7am or 8am GMT when she starts.

Both very tricky match-ups but not without hope (Heather's in good form, Venus hasn't won yet this year); fingers crossed for one or both making R2 :)

Updated rankings, including Heather's 2015 Hobart title points dropping off ( 280 replaced by 60 )

Heather WR 79 vs Timea Babos WR 60
Johanna WR 47 vs (8) Venus Williams WR 10

General betting odds are giving Heather about a 55% chance of victory and Jo about 30%. About what I would have guessed and really does reflect Jo's progress.

What was going on just before play started ? I just switched on to what was clearly some issue being discussed.
