RE: Britennis and The Britennis Podcast

Am sure you have enough going on with the site at the moment not to need any more suggestions for extra, but when you feel the need for more expansion how about a weekly round up of our dubs players?  I know not everyone follow dubs, but I can't be the only one with quite an interest in that department.

Also, just a comment about junior draws/ranking points in your reports.  Several times in your write-ups you hope that the young Brits get drawn in separate sections.  In fact that's almost guaranteed as junior draws are not entirely random.  As far as seedings allow, players from any given country have to be kept apart until the latest possible round.  So, for example, if 5 girls from the UK entered a 32 player tournament in Brazil and one was seeded, 3 of the others would have to be placed in different quarters to the seeded one and the other such that she did not meet any of them until the 2nd round.  This is the case for both ITF and tennis Europe.

When you state the number of points a young player has gained for a junior tournament, are you taking into account points from doubles?  ITF and tennis Europe rankings are calculated using a combination of singles and dubs points as it is a 'combined ranking'.

Didn't know that. Good to know.

Re: Doubles, I'm hoping to do a weekly round-up - this should be tomorrow. Thanks again for the feedback!

Listened to the podcast in full last night, great stuff. But just one note for Stephen when talking about Dan Evans, I thought he was referring to the giant Croat Karlovic initially, as he had got the pronunciation of Dan's nickname incorrect. I've fallen foul of this mistake in the past when speaking to Smethy's dad, so it's an easy mistake to make.

You are meant to pronounce it as if your saying his name.

Not 'eh' as in ' to rhyme with 'day'

but a short 'e' as in 'evans' or 'bet' ....

Say the word 'ever' and then 'evo'

When I last watched him, other players were referring to him as "Eevo" (as in Sheep)

He addresses himself as Evo as in Evans when he's talking to himself in matches, I noticed this watching the Vanni match the other night.

But does it really matter?

Quick update:

I know some of you, when I initially put this idea to the forum, were keen to have interviews with players.

Well, here we go: 10 minutes with Lloyd Glasspool from around 40 minute mark, and interviews with Broady, Bambridge and Pauffley after their R1 wins in Glasgow this week.

Just a point about the women's ranking system.  In your Glasgow round up you state that Miss Boulter will be back on the rankings if she wins her next match.  Not so.  That will give her 4 points, which, as she has no other points at the moment, is not enough.  The rule is that a player will enter the rankings when they have points from 3 different tournaments or a minimum of 10 points in total.

This always strikes me as a totally iniquitous system as players like Emily A, Jasmine A and Freya got more than 3 (but less than 10) points in their first forays into the professional game but then were still unranked and well down the entry list of subsequent tournaments behind players who had a total of 3 points (1 from each of 3 tournaments) and were therefore ranked!  Really don't see why it's not the same as the men - a point equals a ranking.

Not really wanting to start a WTA ranking points debate here, but I think simply making it 3 ranking points and you're ranked would be best, well as long as the WTA dishes out points for many R1 and higher level QR1 losers often by WC. Actually I think 3 points from one tournament will often be more worthy than 3 from 3.

Ah yes, forgot about the WTA points for turning up!  Agree then that  3 points from any number of tournaments and you should be ranked makes most sense.

Wow. I did not know that. What a totally stupid system.
