SPOTY 2015 & 2016

Andy currently odds on ahead of Jess Ennis-Hill. Kevin Sinfield might be dangerous if the rugby league followers have really been getting on mass behind one of their own.

Best odds from oddschecker :

Andy Murray : 8/13

Jessica Ennis-Hill : 10/3

Kevin Sinfield : 10/1

Tyson Fury : 16/1

Lewis Hamilton : 33/1

100/1 bar

I'd guess that it's the GB Davis Cup team against the England women's football team for team of the year and maybe Leon vs Mark Sampson, the England women's football manager, for coach of the year.

RE: SPOTY 2016

For all the protests about Fury I thought it may make his supporters more likely to vote

Thoroughly enjoyable show for a change, AM of course stand out nominee but plenty of time for Rutherford. Would love to see Eddy Izard give Tyson Fury a big hug.

The last time I looked, Andy was odds-on to win the main award, the GB Davis Cup team favourites to win the team award and Leon, deservedly I think, 1/100 (!) on favourite to win the coach of the year award. Hoping for a tennis triple then, but given that the BBC decide the latter two awards, I wonder if they'll decide to spread it around a bit.

Home town decision on coach of the year.Quite well received

Right enough, tremendous effort by Northern Ireland to top their qualifying group with their resources.

Great show all round, Michael O'Neil thoroughly deserved his manager of the year award given the raw material he has to work with and his track record of over achievement as a manager is pretty consistent.

Team of the year nice to see everyone get rewarded for what has been a 5 year commitment by all of our male professional players good enough to make a living playing tennis.

Andy throughly deserved, his final sentence said it all. Obviously a bit of talent helps but taking that as a given success is dependent on unrelenting dedication and hard work.

So with his Young SPOTY and the team award and nobody ever having won the main award three times I think Andy is now arguably the most prolific sport personality winner ever.

Sorry Oakland.  I know I am biased, but the coach of the year HAD to go to Leon.  I respect what Michael O'Neil has done with a very small talent pool but at the end of the day, all they have done is get through a qualifying campaign.  It is a big achievement for Northern Ireland and congratulations to them. But in the grand scheme of things, this is a very minor success.  If they are going to give it to him, then why not Chris Coleman.  After all, it is over 50 years since Wales made it to a major championship and N Ireland have appeared in tournaments far more recently than that.

This is about achievement, or at least it should be. Leon has taken GB tennis from (to use a football analogy) a relegation play-off for the Vauxhall Conference to World Champions and World Nš1 in just five years. That trumps anything achieved by the N Ireland coach by a country mile.

The fact is that had this event been held anywhere else in the UK, Leon would have won.  This was playing to an audience and home town bias - pure and simple.

No - as far as I can tell it is about personality (it is not, after all, the Sports Achiever of the Year" award). I am torn, as I would like to see Leon win, but the question I ask myself is "Could Leon have won without Andy?".

I agree that the name of the event is wrong although that technically only applies to the "Personality" who wins - in this case Andy.  The trophy in Leon's category is "Coach of the Year" and not "Coaching Personality of the Year", so that argument - valid though it is for the main trophy - is not valid in this case.

There is the argument that all Leon had to do was pick Andy.  (Andy would strongly deny that) But it is what he has achieved over the last 5 years that is so remarkable and much of the earlier part of that success was without Andy.

If we are going to focus only this year's record and not consider the previous years, then fair enough.  Northern Ireland this year have won 3 competitive matches (out of 6 played). They have beaten Finland, Greece and the Faroe Islands.  Sorry, but that is not enough to justify this decision.  In the same way you could argue that Leon wouldn't have had his success without Andy, you could also argue that Michael O'Neil wouldn't have had his success if N Ireland had been drawn in a group with Germany or Spain.

I accept that as a mad tennis fan, I am biased.  But bookies had Leon at 1/100 on (see Steven's earlier post) so somebody must agree with me.

On a completely different note, for those here that are on Twitter, Leon has apparently joined the twittersphere. @LeonSmith_1

Now this in itself is only minor news, but you know I love a scoop. I asked Leon a year ago in La Manga if he was on Twitter. He said that as DC Captain, it probably wasn't a good idea as he would be inundated with people trying to offer advice. So does his appearance on Twitter indicate that he is going to step down as DC Captain ?

You heard it here first folks - whether it is right or wrong.
