Congratulations to Kyle Edmund on winning the tie break tens tournament and beating Andy Murray in the final.
However the big story seems to be the prize money. Kyle won $250K which is more than he earned in the whole of 2015 and almost three times more than winning an ATP 250 event.
I assume the LTA will decide Kyle will be self funded next year....
Kyle did have to play a whole four tiebreaks in a field of 6 players including McEnroe, Henman and Malisse in one group and him, Andy and Ferrer in the other and he won 3 of the 4 ( lost to Andy in the group ).
Not really taken any notice of this event but looking at the website reveals the sponsors are Betway !
Thats great ! The LTA and All England club enforce what is effectively a blanket ban on players being sponsored by betting companies while the loophole is
provided for the likes of Murray,Henman,Edmund etc for events such as this ! A young player cant wear a patch and receive say 10k per annum but Kyle can take home £250k in one appearance ?
LTA are heavy handed on players that need them but allow anything with the players they need to be associated with !!!!
I'm a big fan of Judy Murray but seemingly there was a Miss-Hits session for mums and daughters at the Royal Albert Hall earlier in the day.
Fine - makes sense - if you're going to put down a tennis court surface, try and get some extra use out of it, as much use as possible. And Miss-Hits is a nice programme designed to make tennis more appealing to girls and attract more girls who wouldn't otherwise get to do tennis.
And Judy has tweeted some lovely photos of some little girls and their mums running around having fun.
BUT there are about half a dozen (or 8, in fact, looking pretty lost in the huge Albert Hall).
AND one of them, from the tweet, is Iain Bates daughter (head of women's tennis!!!).
AND another is the daughter of Belinda Moore, who is "Director of Sport at Speed Communications, previously at Team GB and BBC Sport".
Mixed views on this. Don't think I would like players directly sponsored by betting companies but not sure it worries me that they sponsor an exhibition event. Every player will have got a decent appearance fee behind the scenes and if Kyle has got the headline-grabbing bonus good luck to him. It will do his future earnings no harm to become known to the British public a bit more through an event like this.
Also pretty convinced the LTA have a very small role in this event and doubt they are responsible for choosing the line-up of players. Think the main mover and shaker behind this is IMG as part of their Legends Circuit.
Regarding the Miss-Hits, I wish I could say I was surprised at those selected, but often in these 'exhibition' kids' hits it is like this. However, for a few years Annabel Croft's tennis school ran free sessions in Wimbledon Park alongside Wimbledon taking absolutely any child who turned up (not sure if she still does this but I think so). And recently at the O2, Isner and Petchey ran coaching clinics for schoolchildren, the participants being from schools who had reached a certain point in a schools championship (a wonderful prize IMO). Such a shame Judy could not have found more worthy recipients for this treat at the Albert Hall.
Nothing to do with LTA. Img event and it's a new concept by a private company helped along by img. Up to them if they want to put up a big purse surely?
Still been trying to find a "youtube" link for the final. Nothing anywhere. There is a video link on the Sky website, but it is "not available in my area".
Delighted for Kyle, big money which will help him a lot. Suspect James Ward may be doubly disappointed having not played Davis Cup and then missing out on this! But that's life I suppose.
I saw that about Judy's Mis Hits thing and Iain Bates daughter etc. She is a great ambassador but is still a bit detached from reality! As was all the talk about where are the top juniors etc. After the Davis cup. Tennis is a sport for the wealthy, you have no chance of being a top junior unless you are very wealthy as to travel all over Europe/the world, as the Lta like far away weak events, is beyond all but the very wealthy.
Tie break event sounded like a fun event, Shame so few will have seen it as in sky on a sat eve. Not much of an audience for new fans.
Thanks Madeline. But as with so many videos on Sky and the BBC sites, this is only available to viewers in the UK. One day, I may have to move back there.
Edit
Strange thing is, I can watch the interview video below, but they won't let me to view the highlights
