I watched the first set of Christie's game. Knoll played with lots of variations, drop shots, serve and volley, slices off both wings, even some chip and charge. It really threw Christie who couldn't get into a rhythm, and she spent most of the first set berating herself. But she managed to cling in there and work her way back from 3-0 down, and save a set point.
Minnen played very well to knock out the third seed, but is a more orthodox player, so might be more straightforward.
Well done, Freya, now up to about WR 410, adding on this week so far to last week's QF, and that top 400 ( possibly 380s ) and provisional GB number 7 a win away.
Knoll's forehand was a major weakness it was just slice and not even good slice. She had good serve and good net skills though. Freya was pretty solid all round except being uncomfortable at the net. I feel she was more comfortable off the forehand wing. It took her a while to get used to Knoll's game I think but once she did she was fine. Knoll's second serve half way up the net at 5-6 in the TB helped.
Kerkhove hit a number of winners against a rather defensive Amanmuradova.
From the little I saw Bolkvadze held her own against Dodin, looks a decent player. Any chance she will turn British at some point? I'm not sure you would be able to see Dodin if she stood behind a lamp post.
Minnen against Vrljic was probably the best match with a bit more variety but the youngster overcome the veteran.
