Yes, but the LTA has just financed two 25ks and, in your list, Amanda C, Emily WS, Harriet and Katy D all decided not to play. (And that wasn't a surprise for most of them).

I would say that the LTA should be trying to keep some balance of 10Ks and 25Ks.

We may have been short of 25K players this year, but there could certainly be more next year if some better form and less injuries, plus younger players possibly developing quicker than anticipated. We could / should certainly be more generally competitive in 25Ks. You risk being too clever by half by trying to alter schedules overmuch for the next year to more fall in with events and rankings in the current year. A fair amount of consistency isn't a bad idea ( but then not just with regards scheduling ).

Yes, a case for more 10Ks, but for practically doing away with 25Ks ? - not for me.

Yes, CD, that's a mystery to me too.

In particular I think that AmandaC is on a hiding to nothing, playing and winning 10ks on her favourite surface week after week, until she gets injured. If she wants to progress, she needs to make every match about quadruple the ranking points - which is the difference between 10k and 25k.

Emily, Harriet and Katy were all about 8,000 miles away.

There is a run of 25ks on Clay in USA in January. It will be interesting to see if Amanda C heads over there to try and push her ranking higher.

I think the LTA got it right with a series of 10ks to start with the only thing I would have added is a few more 25ks towards the end of the season for those who progressed like Freya.
The 10ks were aimed at the likes of Lisa Whybourn, Gabbi Taylor, Maia Lumsden, Jodie Burrage, Emily Appleton, Anna Brogan, Eden Silva, Emily Arbuthnott and any of the long term injured who want to start back(Sam,Jade, Eleanor, Katie B) plus those GB players hovering in the lower rankings. Freya was obviously on this list, but has progressed very quickly.
Poor old Harriet, Katy, Tara and Katie will have to travel to progress.

There needs to be a mix of 10/15 and 25k's.

The problem is the 3 50k's during the grass court season when there are now 3 WTA events plus Wimbledon. One 50k during the second week of RG is enough. Use the 100k you save in another 2 25k's a couple of 15 and a couple of 10k's.

In Mandy's defence she's played 15Ks and 25Ks at various points and has stepped up to 50K (reaching QF of Surbiton) and attempted qualies for a 75K too. Yes she'll need to play more above 10K level in 2016 but its not as if she's exclusively played at the lowest level.

Yes, and Mandy is one of the VERY few players who will have actually be entitled to something out of the Bonus Top-Up Scheme this year.

Being under 25, and having made the QF of the 50k, that's an extra £500.

The person in the admin office must have been surrounded by a cloud of moths when he/she took that cheque book out of the drawer...

Here's hoping they did as I'm not sure that Mandy has ever been rolling in funding. I've looked in more depth at Mandy's year and she's played the following:

Grand Slam (qualifying) X 1

75K X 1 (reach final round of stacked qualifying)

50K X 3 (one QF and two defeats in qualies)

25K X 9 (lost in qualies and 1st round a few times, but also reached a couple of 2nd rounds and a SF)

15K X 2 (one final and one 1st round loss)

10K X 9 (four titles)

After an initial run of 3 10Ks in February she didn't play at that level again until July, and that was just the once, it's only really since September she's played most of her 10Ks and that seems to be because she had very mixed success at the higher level and perhaps because of what was on offer/ where she could afford to travel to.

Yes, the Top-Up Scheme seems rather pointless now, and I'd pretty much forgotten about it until you said that. It's a shame.

Good job she's a highly paid tennis player - rather than a pen pusher struggling on £640,000 a year - where will she park the new Ferrari wink
