It's worth remembering that when Océane won this event last year, she was a qualifier, ranked (from memory) about 550 in the world. And - to everyone outside of France - a surprise (people were half-expecting Charlotte Pearce to put her out in the QR1).

Only one year older than Freya, it's a very similar profile. So she's not a better player than Freya, as such, she's just won one year's worth of extra matches, which is not the same thing at all.

Seems like, from the score, that it was an exciting final.

Well done to both ! Bad luck, Freya but no biggie.....

Wouldn't bet against Freya being ranked in the top 150 this time next year like Dodin either smile

You forget that freya has the misfortune to be 'represented' by the LTA.

After Dodin won Shrewsbury, the FFT gave her wildcards to a 100K (the LTA don't have any), to a 125k (the LTA don't have any); to the Australian Open, under their reciprocal arrangement (the LTA doesn't do this), to the French Open and to the US Open (the LTA doesn't do this).

very good points, wimbeldont.

And worth adding that these wildcards, and all the other help, were given despite/irregardless of the fact that she only ever got to JWR 180 in the juniors - because no one cares (by and large) what the actual results are in juniors, it's your potential that counts.

What a week for Freya. Will have to drastically have to change her plans for next year now. Aiming for 25k's and 50k's.

To think, people were saying we haven't got players good enough to play in 25k's. If we didn't have them, these sort of results wouldn't happen. I remember when Tara had a run at a 25k aged 15. Jo Ko had a final when around 17. And obviously Bally and Anne had some good results at 17/18.

I take your point, but we all know it's because the French have a much better depth of quality in their ranks (which you can in turn blame the LTA for). The cream will rise and if she continues putting in good results, the appropriate WC's will come. So many British wild cards have been handed out over the years during the grass season, to Q and MD of events of different levels, that have come to nothing. So, if you're good enough, you're good enough. We're a slam nation so she still has it better than many when it comes to WC opportunities.

I don't agree. We don;t have enough players to justify holding lots of 25ks. Britain had one player in the last 8. And only two players in the last 16 (one who only got there by beating a fellow Brit). Spending 50k for that is not a good use of money, in my view (although I'm thrilled for Freya, of course). The new plans (for the girls, note) makes a fair bit of sense.

If Freya is funded, she would have had absolutely no problem picking up these points elsewhere i.e. either elsewhere in the world, or via other events (the high ranked ones) in the UK.

And she won't have to change her plans drastically - her coach was quite clear some time ago about what her plans were and it was based around her level and what he expected her level to be, and it's all pretty much in line with where she is now (she's outperformed slightly but not that much) i.e. if he expected her to make semis in 25ks, then the fact she won one won't change things 'drastically'.

The appropriate wildcards will not come, because the appropriate tournaments have been cut from the LTA schedule for 2016.

Freya now joins the several British women, ranked from 240ish to 400ish, KatyD, AmandaC, EmilyWS, Harriet, Tara, for whom 10k points are pretty meaningless, and who must schlepp round Eurasia in search of 25ks to enter. The next UK 25k is scheduled for November 2016.

She now has 89 points. I'd suggest that the next meaningful milestone is to get to around 200 points, around WR240 - which gets you into GS qualies. With 12 points for a 10k title, she's about 9 titles short.
