Zoe, I believe, hails from somewhere near Cambridge. She's been a regular competitor on the domestic circuit from a young age and always had good solid results, although rarely played in the top level of competition. I think she's one who stayed in school and so has a lower profile. I always enjoyed watching her whenever I came across her as she has a different style of play to most of the girls. She's not the tallest one out there and so has developed a very 'crafty' game which is very entertaining to watch and for some opponents, immensely frustrating to play!
College rankings are baffling! How players who are in the middle of a line up end up being ranked when their team mates are not, despite them clearly being better makes no sense! Zoe was a decent junior, you summarise her quite well tbh. Not the best Brit in the USA college system though by a long way.
Lauryn John-Baptiste has signed up with Tennis Smart, according to their site, and in keeping with her plans (as of last year) to go College next year.
There's a very nice video for anyone who hasn't seen her play.
Yes CD, that is Zoe. And a good video from Lauryn JB - I've always rated her as a player, although when she was younger she used to get over-emotional on court. Seems to have grown out of that now. Can imagine colleges really going for her. Think she is quite bright. I believe she received a scholarship to the academy at Bournemouth and its associated school.

Coaches have to arrange their line-up in order of current strength not rankings order. These may not be the same for a number of reasons. Somebody unranked or lower ranked may be having a purple patch and playing better than a ranked team-mate and so would have to be fielded above them. At the beginning of the season some of the top players on a team may not have been playing much college tennis (perhaps having done futures etc during the autumn) and so don't have enough points yet for a ranking. If an opposing coach feels the team is not in current strength order he/she can challenge the match results with the aim of having them voided.
Basically players get points for each win, for example
4 against an unranked opponent,
7 against an opponent ranked 151-175
15 against an opponent ranked 66-80
80 against an opponent ranked 1-5
and a sliding scale in between all those examples.
They also get points taken away for each loss ranging from 1.35 points for a loss against an unranked player to 0.1 points for a loss against players ranked 1-5
At each ranking date there is a set number of wins which can be counted towards a ranking from 5 towards the end of the Autumn up to 15 at the end of the summer. A player's top wins up to the allowable number are taken into account and the points added up. Then the number of points to be deducted for losses are added up and subtracted from the winning points total. All losses are taken into account no matter how many they are.
As the season moves on and the ranking of an opponent played at the beginning of the season moves up or down, so the number of points awarded for beating or losing to them moves up and down. That is the points awarded for any win or loss relate to the opponent's ranking at the time of each rankings run, not the date they were played.
As the season wears on, the top players in a team generally become the highest ranked and the rankings overall become more meaningful.
Bet you're sorry you wondered how they worked now Kenneth!!!

I don't know what the LTA think they're looking for......
Can't help thinking it's another case of those in the know getting the largesse.....money for the boys......
You don't, in my humble opinion (and based on a lot of years in French detection), have to be Einstein to rank Lauryn higher than some of the others who are getting nicely funded.....
Hopefully Lauryn is going to college because that's what she really wants to do, and not through any sense of being underappreciated / undersupported on these shores. All the best to her.

Yes, absolutely. And probably a very wise option.
However, a bit of choice might have been nice......
Thanks for the explanation Optimist. It is intriguing though how someone mid order in a middle ranking set up can get ranked though above so many better players. Hey ho, very interesting mind.
Seems sensible, actually a no brainier, for just about all our girls/boys to go to Uni as other than say Miss Swan they are not yet good enough to turn pro. So go see how you can compete against some great players, in a pro environment, in fact I'd say support given at most USA unis, especially the top ones will be far superior to the support offered as a low ranking pro on the "tour". So for Lauren J Baptiste to do that makes total sense. She is good but not really showed she is exceptional, maybe this will be the platform to show how good she is. I'm sure she will get snapped up by a top uni.
