Earlier in the thread there were some questions about Pippa Horn who appeared to have dropped off the Texas roster before finishing her degree. I understand she is completing her degree there but is no longer part of the tennis team, in effect has given up the sport in any meaningful way. No idea why although she never rose higher than 6 in the lineup and never really got better than a 50:50 W/L record (which I personally find quite surprising).
Yes, they receive a substantial fee from the universities. However, as they specialise in only one sport, it's no good them getting a reputation for selling round pegs for square holes just to get their commission. There's a strong bush telegraph in college tennis and they'd soon find themselves out of business. They will both have their networks and will obviously push their stronger candidates to those universities where they have a good relationship with the coach. However, they will both be aware of which teams have seniors leaving and, assuming the institution has a good reputation, I'm sure they will be contacting those coaches with videos and resumes as well.
I have had a pm from a recruitment company referencing this post and saying that paying a recruitment company a fee is against NCAA rules. Not sure if this is a rule change or if I just got it wrong, but happy to highlight the correct situation anyway.
Jordan Angus has capped off a decent college career as USD captain and now male torero of the year in what has been one of the most successful USD male tennis team performances every.
So good luck to him in what ever he may to choose to do in 2017 after graduation.
Not GB but the story of how you can be at college, going psychology and finance, with homework due in in two days time, and STILL get to Wimbly Round three:
Also not GB, but I was looking at the Challenger draws for this week, and saw a name in the SFs of Bastad that I didn't recognise, Carl Soderlund, who had victories over Fabbiano and Gimeno-Traver in R16 and QFs. Googled and discovered he's someone who didn't play much in the way of juniors and hasn't played really at all outside the Nordic futures (where he did, however, beat Lloyd Glasspool, so I should have recognised the name). And he's about to head off to the University of Virginia.
Interesting that Cici Bellis (age 17, ranked about WTA 200, and friend of Katie Swan) has still decided to go to college (for the time being, at any rate) ....
Good luck to her, however it pans out - a very talented tennis player with a great team around her.
Fantastic for Emily, will really lift the quality of practice but I can't really see the point for Cici i.e. I don't think this in any way a tennis decision in that it is not going to improve her game.
I understand the attraction Stanford is a truly impressive place (and looking beautiful on BT Sport at this very moment) and she has grown up literally over the road in Menlo Park. Stanford sport has probably been a significant part of her life through childhood so I don't really see it as a going to college thing generic, much more I always fancied a year or two at the fantastic institution in my back garden.
I think for the most part she will be essentially utilising the resources she already has from a tennis perspective although there is extensive experience and understanding of how to optimise conditioning in a teenager/young adult I doubt very much whether she will graduate, as I am sure her tennis will take off (it already has) and take over.
Just to highlight on this page the amazing run that Cam Norrie is having in Challengers this week.
What an endorsement for US college tennis as an apprenticeship tool.
Still only 20 (just), and about to be WR 360 or so (and counting), and not having played many tournaments, and having completed the requisite studies too....
And to back that up - very striking that the US's first Olympic tennis medal goes to a team in which one member spent four years at university. Or that said person came very close to beating Andy Murray - and is ranked 22nd in the world after what, two years on Tour?
I thought this sounded an excellent service provided by the USTA - providing an on-site, all-day help service to all college players playing in the local 10k (helping with coaching, planning, food, travel, etc. etc. etc.)
yes that Uni is Texas Christian University , Forth Worth Texas. wonderful programme lead by David Roditi and Devin Bowen, can't recommend it enough. Other alumni include Jo Konta's current coach Esteban Carril, who has had a lot greater influence on her recent surge in form than any cut in funding she may or may not have had!!
