US College Signings 2016 (and general college tennis chat)

I would agree with optimist about Ivy League. Not many will be able to go to Ivy League and then become a pro. For a starter many of the "top" kids have missed so much school and got quite average grades at school that the academics at a Ivy League would be a huge ask. Whilst some who go to the states to play and study most will not become pro tennis players. Most will go and do a normal job but had an amazing experience and will add to the general well being of the school they attend.

As for TSUSA I only heard of them a couple of months back when Nottingham TC announced they were linking up with them. I think there is some nottingham link. They were very pro Sarah Borwell prior to that. Competition is good, it makes people up their game and improve customer service. It is good that they are UK based so they will know the players one would hope. If they have good college coaches links too then great.

Some kids don't bother with agents and have sorted themselves fine, all the colleges have great athletic websites and the coaches email addresses are all there. At the end of the day the recruiting coach at the college can soon change and that changes a lot of things anyway.

Personally though I think use of an agent is best, so long as their service to the kid and the parents are good. That is what we will be doing.

I totally agree with Kenneth, to be able to deal with an agent face to face and they are nearby is a good thing as scholarship process can become quite stressful and i heard TSUSA are more or less 24/7 side by side with the parents , pretty sure one of their director went through the American tennis circuit himself and they just recruited another lady coach who also went through the American system. They also have a top British coach on board as well, who can help with any extra work a player may need especially if they haven't been a full time player .... Apparently they not just looking for the cream of players , they more focus on helping any players who REALLY want to go and REALLY want to be part of a team as they said there are enough colleges to suit any level of players and suit any level of academic a player is capable of ... I am definitely keeping an eye on them for my son

Thanks MaryPoppins for entering another name into people's consciousness, particularly those who may have children that could be considering in time looking for a college.

I am sure most parents will look for as much information as they can from many sources. They certainly should. So any info such as yours adds to what is available.

Your welcome Indiana... Another thing I was told about them was that they explained the real difference between Division and Division 2 status ... ie alot of the status is based on finance a university is able to invests into all sports plus the major part of the status is based on American football, basketball and baseball so if you are parents looking for a college do not be tunnelled into only considering division one as if you are not in the top fifty division one , it more or less doesn't make a d whether you go to division 1 or top of division 2 and apparently this is what TSUSA take pride in, matching a coach, uni with a player not just by standards but by what they want out of their academic and the personality of the player with the coach etc etc

I would say there is a lot of difference between Div 1 and 2. There is a lot of difference between the "super conferences" (big 5) as mentioned above and the rest of Div 1, which is mainly to do with football. However some really good places outside of those that would still be a level above Div 2.

It is a lot harder for boys though as more competition and lower number of scholarships.

The way we did it was to research the best D1 tennis colleges and the best conferences and then send them a match video. Then sat back and waited for the offers - which came. The process was very straightforward, the coaches were very helpful, paying for visits and coming over here to visit us. Ended up at a top college with a successful college career. Granted we may just have been lucky but it wasn't a difficult process so there are many routes that people can take and an agent is not always needed

No not many tennis pro players came out from Ivy League , pretty sure Blake was one of them , however there are many athletes that went to Ivy League but again tend to be Ice Hockey, Baseball, Basketball and American Football

James Blake did indeed come out of Harvard. But in the past few weeks alone, our players have encountered ... and indeed lost to ... James Cerretani (Brown, I think, together with Jonny Marray's erstwhile partner Adil Shamasdin ... remember looking them up when Marray and Shamasdin were playing), Max Schnur (Columbia) and Winston Lin (Columbia). And I think Matija Pecotic, who was around for several Futures and Challengers, was Princeton. So the Ivy League can't be doing too terribly, at least on the men's side.

Have added a bunch of names to P 1:  Mark L, Lauren W-S, Darinka T, Jared B, Brodie W, Catherine B

Also have asked around about TSUSA and TBH it doesn't seem well known although someone told me it was a predominantly Polish outfit which had just expanded into this country.  Apologies if I'm wrong but I do wonder if our new poster has a connection with it, the detailed knowledge and glowing testimonials read like an advertisement to me.  Nothing wrong with that if it is the case, families looking to the send their kids to the States probably welcome a new name to look at, but a disclaimer would be nice.

Thanks, as ever, Optimist, for your comprehensive and careful information. Interesting to see the lists filling up.

TO, I wonder if it might be worth putting the UTRs of the players going to college in brackets, or perhaps ordering by UTR, to give a little more of an idea as to how well the players might do in college? If you fancy it, I've done the necessary research and ordered them accordingly. UTRs change rapidly, but in general they stay at the same level, so it wouldn't need updating hugely regularly.

I've put some players already in college in italics for comparison, with their current UTR position in Brits in US college next to them

Men

Cameron Norrie - TCU [14.74] #1
Aswin Lizen - Virgina [13.73]
Jack Findel-Hawkins - North Florida [13.56] #10
Charles Broom - Dartmouth [13.09]
Matthew Story - Memphis [12.82]
Ross Watson - Pacific [12.30]
Angus Bradshaw - Stetson [12.26]
Jack Burkill - North Carolina-Greensboro [12.00]
Charlie Croxford - Nevada-Las Vegas [11.83]
Luke Purser - Youngstown State [11.81]
Milo Bargeron - Appalachian State [11.64]
Ross Gilbert - Gardner-Webb [11.55]
Jared Bones - North Georgia (Div 2) [11.41]
James Hardiman - Southern Indiana (Div 2) [11.38]
Caleb Dyer - Incarnate Word [11.37]
George Barfoot - Belmont Abbey (Div 2) [11.17]
Mark Laishley - North Georgia (Div 2) [11.16]
Edward Colclough - North Carolina-Asheville [10.93]
David Perez - Illinois-Springfield (Div 2) [10.86]
Dom Lea - N Florida [10.41]
Akshay Kumar - Illinois-Springfiled (Div 2) [5.54]

Got nothing to do with them in business what so ever , just know of people who used them and they definitely not polish , definitely British base with British coaches as director , why don't you just read about them on their website , that's where I got most of my info from... It's there in plain daylight for all to see and on Facebook too

Added Elsa P and Marissa S

Listing the UTRs is quite illuminating BM, certainly shows the great range of standards which are accepted into the college system.  Something for everyone but clearly not all of them are leading to a career in the sport!  I'll leave the list in alphabetical order at the moment - makes it easier for me to see who I've already added to it.  But it might be an interesting exercise at the end to add the UTRs to the names.

Each team in each "division" (1,2,3,etc.) is part of a conference. Each conference has a league, at the end the top number of teams (varies depending on size of conference) play off, via a knock out competition, to decide the champions and who then goes through to the Nationals. Some conferences have more slots than others though.

It seems that Emily's team won their conference championships.

if you know the NFL it's a bit like that with the Super bowl the ultimate aim
