Today's win was Gabi's first in a WTA-ranked event this year but it's only her 4th WTA-ranked tournament, the others all having been 50Ks or above (losses to Naomi B, Tara and Linette)

Gabi def. Izzy 7-5 6-3


Gabi still has another year as a junior and is very much a 'dark horse' as she's played so little this year, and trains in Spain.

So it will be exciting to see what level she's got, if she actually plays some adult tournaments.

Saw her at Surbiton and she has a great, low to the ground, balanced, strong game.

Do hope her injury is a thing of the past and she's now got her programme in place. Interesting to see where it goes.....

I saw Gabi at Ilkley and I've seen Izzy before and i'm not surprised by that result. I think Gabi could progress quite nicely if she can stay fit and play more on the senior level. Izzy - i'm not convinced about yet. She has talent, but lacks that consistency required.

I don't think Gabi has to play more at the senior level yet.

She's still a junior next year.

It depends on her goals.

But, yes, I think she's very interesting (seems to hold her cards quite close to her chest too) and has a good game.

Seems a serious player too - committed.

Isabelle's high ranking was due to 18pts from a 25k SF. When that dropped off she fell about 250 places. She is now clawing this back - will be interesting to see where she is in a few months as she has scored in her last 3 events and seems to finding some consistancy. Might have gone further in this one but for meeting Gabriella, who can trouble anyone on her day.
