Interesting match up. John-Patrick strikes me as a player that James should at least be very competitive with in any reasonable form.
Yay
Great to see that James was not only competitive with JPS, but won. As Topemp said, JPS is no superstar, but seems to be fairly consistent so why I thought he would be an interesting test of where James was at.
Was pleasant reading.

But as mentioned the other week when J-P played Dan Cox (and won in three, but not easily), I've always been disappointed when I've seen J-P play, nice guy and he obviously wins some decent matches but can't help thinking he's overranked and it's a little dodgy.
However, it'd be churlish not to say 'hurrah' !!!!!
I really don't get why James W is not dropping down a level slightly at the mo. Im not too sure how it works with tournament entries - suppose he would have expected to have won a match or two by now when he entered Mons but could he not have pulled out and at least gone entered an easier challenger or maybe even a 15k just to restart the winning habit? I hope I'm wrong but i see his chances of a win against JPS as about 1 in10 given current form. It seems odd not to try something different.
I agree with your general point, though don't believe he can drop out of an event he has entered and been accepted for to try his luck at lower level.
He could of course have entered a lower level tourney in first place.
Well I could have timed the above comment better!! :) Though I'd rather James make me look bad and win!! So glad about this match - result and performance from the little I saw (and also glad that it never got as bad as Mike C suggested when he guessed in the commentary for Kyle's match that it was a 19 match loosing streak James broke!!!).
I guess I expected some fluctuations in circumstances a bit between now and late November but my feelings about the no. 2 spot for the DC final are suddenly quite different from 7-8 days ago!!
So how does it work with entries for tournaments - how far in advance do you have to enter and withdraw etc? I thought I had picked up that people can enter more than one in the same week - or is that just if you are on the reserves list? Where is good for checking all that kind of thing e.g. I know Evo is close to the cut for a 50K main draw in the US next week - how do I check how close he is? Does he get penalised for not showing up for Qs if he doesn't make main draw?
Maybe we could do with a sticky thread in GB entries and rankings that explains such things?
Also, if a player like James or Kyle or Evo had decided to change their schedule to get as much practice on clay as possible since the DC final was decided (though I dont think this likely) which week would we first start to see the change?

(A) 9 - When tournament Withdrawal Deadlines pass, how are the Acceptance Lists compiled and will I be committed to play if accepted into a draw?
If a player is accepted into a Main Draw or Qualifying Draw of more than one (1) tournament in a given week, they will be removed from all but one (1) list based on the following criteria 1. Main Draw will take priority over Qualifying Draw 2. Tournament Entry Priority as specified by player at time of submitting entries If no Entry Priority was specified, then the following criteria will be used 1. Tournaments offering highest prize money, or if equal; 2. The Entry List in which the player was placed highest, or if equal; 3. The tournament which is geographically closest to the players country of nationality
Players should be aware that it is therefore possible that they will be accepted into any tournament they have chosen to enter and will be committed to show up and play in that tournament regardless of players specified priority.
Any player who is accepted into a Main Draw or Qualifying Draw of any tournament is then committed to play that tournament and CANNOT withdraw to play in any other tournament during the same week
Players should only choose to submit an entry into tournaments that they are prepared to go to and play.
In response to your other questions (I believe I am right in saying) players CAN enter more than 1 event, and the player sets the priority their entry should be taken in, but the minute they are accepted, then they are committed, they can withdraw up to a certain point but they can't withdraw to enter a different tournament only to not play at all. After the w/d deadline they are committed and can't withdraw without permission without being fined.
The entry deadlines are 2 weeks for futures, 3 weeks for Challengers and 6 weeks for ATP/ GS.
That's certainly right for the women up to 100K level and the men up to 15K level, thereafter the WTA and ATP respectively take over the administration and I believe their rules are slightly different.
Of course, it should be remembered that Leon Smith is in Mons this week, coaching James, or - at least - helping him and watching him and trying to get him on the right road again.
Which may well have a big deal to do with the result yesterday.
L16: James Ward WR 150 vs (Q) Karen Khachanov (RUS) WR 166 (CH = 164 last month)
Let's hope Dino doesn't revert to recent type & lose to the 19-year-old, lower-ranked Russian, who saw off Dodig by 7-6(4) 3-6 7-6(4) in two hours 32 minutes!

Interesting!
What has led to him doing that? Is that just something he has decided to do as DC captain? Something has made a pretty dramatic difference anyway!
