re: clay, it's not just the shots and tactics, it's the movement, the footwork recovery from the last shot - it shows up the players who haven't grown up or at least trained a good while on it. would have thought ward's the man for the clay court tie so here's hoping that he can find some form out of somewhere - goffin would beat him but surely he should be giving bemelmens of darcis a good game if he can find some sort of game in the meantime.
Interesting that you say that, I found the opposite considering that in Irving, Darcis actually beat Ward and lost to Edmund within three matches.
I know it's an Evo thread, but these differing results against Darcis in Irving in March ( on hard incidentally ) are indeed little surprise given Kyle's clearly better form than James for just about all year ( and James' general form is probably worse now than it was then )
Given also Kyle's clay pedigree, only previous ( and successful ) experience counters for James, but as long as he fails to find form that is surely not enough, just as it was deemed not enough in Glasgow. Neither has Kyle been found wanting, he just hasn't had the experience,
Still time to pass, but Kyle is surely very much in pole position as things stand between him and James, with for me Evo not a contender on clay.
Without some big transformation in the coming weeks, James simply isn't beating Darcis ( if it is he ) in any decisive 5th rubber, Kyle well might beat him.

Regardless of his potential on clay I think he has repeatedly shown that he has zero interest in doing what the Davis Cup captain would like in order to prepare for a tie. He does his own thing and doesn't give two hoots what anyone else thinks. The captain either picks him or doesn't but he sure as hell isn't going to jump through hoops in order to get picked.
Not having this.
1) This is New Evo. He's shown a fight and determination recently that has previously been lacking.
Evo has frequently shown fight and determination at times in the past. What he has rarely done has been to knuckle down for month after month of grind on the tour. Nothing that he has done this summer is any better than what he has done in the past and his capitulation against JP Smith in the Vancouver SF suggests that some old problems still remain. I want to believe that this is a "new Evo" but we have had many false dawns and he still has a lot to prove.
Couldn't agree more with your last comment RJA. I have to admit the new Evo comment from Topemp made me chuckle. There have just been sooo many fresh starts. But really really love watching him play and always hoping that this time he's sorted himself out.

Yes, like you say, those results are indicative of the year-long trajectory of both players. Unless James breaks free of his slump, they remain a clear indicator, for me at least, of who should be chosen as No.2.
