RE: Week 38 - ITF ($75K) - Albuquerque, USA Hard

Broady misses two MP's, and has now been broken after a lucky net chord for Krajicek. It seems she's fated to lose this match.

Oh Naomi. What a shame. And Krajicek's squealing is not at all endearing.

Clearly one that got away at 15-40, 5-6. However, the better player won. Krajicek was the one trying to do something.

Bah, as we've said, wish she could have had 15-40 MP back again to have found a return.

She did pretty well to hang in there and seemed gone at the end, clearly effected by the heat.

A disappointing loss for Naomi Broady who should have done much better on that second serve return at MP. This match showed up the best and worst of her game. Some great serving at times but some woeful second serve returns, I'd rather see her hit long off the return and go for it rather than countless tame shots into the net. I think she could scrape into the top 100 but would need some big improvements in her movement and return game if she's to go much higher.

Naomi did really well to get so close given that she looked like she had absolutely nothing left for much of the match and pretty much relied on her serve to make it so close. Having got so close though, it's a touch one to take but I'm sure, like with her US Open qualies defeat, once she has time to put it into perspective she will see this as another really good week and more steps towards the top 100.

Her level today was nothing like last week, but I think we saw evidence of the 'Karlovic approach' she talked about in her WTA interview last week, and that she now knows that even if she is not playing well her serve can keep her in matches and it came so close to winning her this one. That's not saying she wouldn't prefer to play like last week and not rely on the serve quite so much, especially as I would expect Naomi to find a lot more of her serves coming back if she does make the top 100 and gets to spend more time on the WTA tour.

Thanks for that

Krajicek was certainly generally the better player off the ground, but serves do kinda count in tennis and in the end it was a close match, which Naomi got to the brink of winning. Pity.

I tend to agree with nicofrance. Clearly tough conditions. Naomi had the chances to break in the 2nd set with 2 of the 3 points being 2nd serves and those two match points, one of which was a 2nd serve. Both players have superb first serves and hit some brilliant second serves too but the returning was unimpressive.

I thought Michaella looked much the better player. Naomi seemed desperately slow around the court and made some weird choices, opting to bring Michaella into the net with drop shots when she is clearly brilliant at volleying.

Naomi tried hard but not a great performance despite the astonishing 31 aces. On the positive side, she did keep fighting, despite evidently being unwell and at times very frustrated by own inability to land her serve, especially in that long game in the first set.

In terms of being a top 100 player for a lengthy spell, I think improving her own 2nd serve and especially her 2nd serve return, are the areas that could reap rewards. In both her recent losses, this match and against the talented Ostapenko, Naomi's 2nd serve return has been spectacularly awful.

Thanks. I think it was a gutsy effort from Broady if she wasn't feeling well with the heat but to get so close and lose the match that way will be very disappointing. Its been a good two weeks overall with some decent ranking points and a bit of money to help her on her travels but her game needs improvements and she needs to go for her shots a bit more, I found a lot of her play was too conservative. Shes got a great serve and if she could just add some better returns and some better movement this would make a big difference.

Naomi certainly has played better, but again Krajicek was not overall much the better player or she wouldn"t have ever been two mathpoints down and winning 7-5 in the third

There have recently been signs of better movement and better general play from Naomi if agreed not really today.

But maintain such recent much better consistency on her serve weapon and just keep working on other areas and the future is certainly looking better than I imagine few foresaw not too long ago.

It's most enlightening to discover there are weaknesses in Naomi's game

In the medium to longer term I agree that a more aggressive approach would make sense. Perhaps Michaella's shots were simply coming off the court too fast for Naomi to play her normal game. Her movement this year has looked much better than a few years ago though in this particular match, for some reason, she appeared slow around the court. With her returns, again I suspect there has been an improvement as it looks ok in some matches but she does have some bad days.

I really don't know what is realistic regarding Naomi. Indeed this recent hot spell surprised me.
