Davis Cup 2016 World Group Round 1 GB v Japan - 4th-6th March - NIA, Birmingham

I know it seems a bit early to start this thread but next year's World Group draw is due to take place this week, I think.

The teams in the 2016 World Group and where GB would play them are as follows (the 2015 finalists, who are automatically the top seeds next year wherever they are ranked, and the rest in current ranking order - I'll re-order this once the new rankings come out - edit: done)

3 GBR
4 BEL - home (but not until the Final *)
1 CZE - home
2 SUI - home
5 FRA - away
6 ARG - home
7 SRB - away
8 AUS - away
9 ITA - home
10 CAN - by lot (last played in 1967, before 1970 cut-off)
12 USA - away (but not until the Final *)
13 KAZ - by lot (never played them before)
14 JPN - by lot (last played in 1931, before 1970 cut-off)
15 GER - home (last played in 1973, so just beats the cut-off)
16 CRO - home
17 POL - away (their first time in the World Group)

* Belgium (as this year's other finalists) and USA (as a country we have played in the World Group in each of the last two years) will be on the opposite side of the draw, so we won't be able to meet them before the Final and obviously we won't play any of the other seeded teams in R1.

RE: Davis Cup 2016 - World Group Round 1 - 5th-7th March

We will avoid the Czechs, Swiss and French in the first round as they are all likely to be seeded alongside Belgium and USA who we cannot play either. So only 10 teams in reality.

We probably want to avoid Serbia, Australia, Canada and Poland(clay)

For the same reason GB and USA will be in separate halves, Canada and Japan will be too, as they played each other in the 1st round in both 2014 and 2015.

This won't affect our draw unless Canada are seeded, in which case if they get put in our half, we know that Japan will be in Belgium's half as well as the USA.

Thanks, I was wondering whether that would apply to any other pairs of teams too but didn't have time to check.

Davis Cup 2016 - World Group Round 1 - 4th-6th March

New rankings out - GB up 3 to 3 (best-ever) - less than 4 years ago (Dec 2011, we were 44th with just 430.00 points, we now have 15196.56!), BEL up 4 to 4.

I've updated the first post and this means:

Possible R1 opponents:

ITA - home
GER - home (last played in 1973, so just beats the cut-off)
CRO - home

CAN - by lot (last played in 1967, before 1970 cut-off)
KAZ - by lot (never played them before)
JPN - by lot (last played in 1931, before 1970 cut-off)

POL - away (their first time in the World Group)

Possible QF opponents:

Any of the above plus:
Home v ARG
Away v FRA, SRB or AUS

Possible SF opponents:

Any of the above plus:

Home v CZE or SUI

Possible Final opponents:

Any of the above plus:

Home v BEL
Away v USA

The draw will be on Wednesday at 23.00 BST - see http://www.daviscup.com/en/news/214956.aspx

Just realised my calculations gave us 15271.56 points, i.e. 75 points more than are shown on the DC site - I think they may have missed the 75-point win bonus for beating a team ranked 5-8 (AUS were ranked 7) ... or maybe my brain is just addled after the weekend

Edit: my brain was addled - you only get the bonus points if you beat a higher-ranked team (of course, in the past when we've beaten anyone good, they almost invariably were higher-ranked!), so the 15196.56 on the DC site is correct.

Before we get too excited, Andy Murray will probably not play a full Davis Cup year in 2016. He may play the 1st round or a relegation match to keep us in the world group, but don't expect more than that. As a result Leon Smith will probably step down as captain.

The Andy bit, I'd say not unlikely. I doubt most folk, certainly here, would expect him to play a full year, whatever that entails. Would not exactly be shock, horror, it's a big commitment and he has no doubt other individual aims bext year.

The supposed probable consequent Leon Smith bit, I'd have thought unlikely, but maybe you know something. Whatever, even if he stepped down it would surprise me if it was consequent on Andy's decisions.

Well, he's been quite open about wanting to develop a role as National Coach for Scotland (or something along those lines anyway) and, as I understand it, he lost a large part of his job at the LTA to Bob Brett and hasn't resumed those duties since BB's departure.

Choice of Ground, i.e. the home team.

The teams of the world's top 3 players are all in our half of the draw. We could play Serbia in the 2nd round and the Swiss in the semis.

c = Choice of ground
