An article Mike Dickson wrote about Jamie for the Mail a long, long time ago (10th July 2007, to be precise - we're moving to a new office in a week or so's time & I've been quite busy sorting through old papers prior to chucking them out. Came across a photocopy of it) for anybody who's interested.
Here's a new article on the bbc website, describing how the Davis Cup can not be treated like the so called "World Cup of Football" www.bbc.co.uk/sport/tennis/34977553
I understand what he means, re: a lot of the top10 players were missing this year.
However I can't see it ever changing format, I am assuming it has never changed format in its 100 year history, please correct me if I am wrong?
Hold it every two years max like the Ryder Cup, a straight knockout tournament with 32 teams, starting in March and then the last 8 qualify for a week long finals after the world finals. 4 singles rubbers with 4 different players and 2 doubles rubbers at least. How would you format it?
Even though I am over the moon we have won it, I do think the format is somewhat flawed.

I suspect you may have a problem finding a suitable venue that would have multiple courts with a big enough capacity other than a grand slam venue. Otherwise you would have to drop the format to 3 set matches.
Explains the history and format changes over time. Before 1972, the current champions went straight through to the final round.

I suggest we go back to the pre-1972 arrangement with immediate effect
More seriously, I hadn't realised the change from the challenge round format was so comparatively recent; gotta think that winning this year therefore qualifies as our best ever win
It is a great find ... and I don't understand Simon Briggs making an elementary mistake like the one you picked up, Kounosuke. He's normally pretty decent. But lovely to hear more about that win from Mr Ward's side.
