Clearly Kyle didn't want to upset Andy's chances of going 8-0 in a DC season. Terrific effort and showed the world what a talent he has. Not to be result wise, but no shame in that.
The main thing to take from that is that Goffin is nothing special and barring an injury or a miracle the 5th rubber won't matter. I feel pretty confident Andy will get the three points from here and I don't see him dropping a set.
The Davis Cup Final adds more mental stamina. Straight physically Kyle no doubt can play five sets and these were not too demanding sets in length ( once we got the first game out of the way ! ). But the occasion and emotion can certainly drain you too and they appeared to do so a lot for Kyle today, combined with Goffin stepping it up once he got in it.
Let's hope we do win it before a potential fifth rubber, but be ready to yell for whoever plays if we don't.

Andy always had a contingency plan, having convinced Leon he was totally up for the doubles, what with 200 ranking points at stake in a live second singles rubber for him ( 75 + 125 bonus ).
2-0, 2-1, 3-1

Quite a capitulation from Kyle in the end. Disappointing to just give up towards the end of a close Davis Cup final rubber! The fifth set was quite pathetic

Missed the first rubber due to work but when I saw the picture on my phone of Kyle walking off the court with a towel round his head it seriously brought tears to my eyes.....
Every up and coming youngster has these matches. He'll come back stronger and learn from it much as Andy did from losing to Nalbandian at Wimbledon in '05.
I felt he made it a bit hard for himself, not playing at his best, but hey a straight sets win is a straight sets win. I hope he manages the three days in a row ok. I still have nightmares about the Italy tie, where Andy played doubles then came up short against Fognini. Well done to Bemelmans, though, he played very well. Reminded me of Wardy who plays really well in DC but can't seem to play at that level all the year round.
Not a huge JL supporter, but I do recall him commenting on Kyle's top 50 chances and basically indicating that he had a decent chance of reaching the top 50 but top 20 say would could get a whole lot tougher and one thing he would certainly need to improve is his defensive movement.
Without arrguing ranking figures, I think he's absolutely right about defensive movement, which was something I have thought before and was thinking today even in the first set. I would have been saying "move him around, David".
Kyle does have big strengths, the serve and the err forehand ( and as I already said JL is of course well aware it is the forehand ), but that is an area of concern. I guess stepping round his backhand can certainly leave him often vulnerable, but that defensive anticipation and movement is IMO not up with the generality of at least the top 50 players.
