A break down in the final set now

Naomi went 0-3* down but has just broken back.
For some reason her service seems to have deserted her in the 3rd set, low % 1st serves in, no aces, 2DFs.

Naomi saves three match points to stay in.

Jessica will now serve for the match.

I see a withdrawal in the MD, any chance Naomi gets a LL spot?

Shame for Naomi, a tough draw as No.1 seed and she came through one close match but not the second. Of course if she does get a LL place anyway she will be a lot less disappointed about losing today.

Pity that the serve seemed to go off during the match. But that has been happening much less lately, which I see as much of the reason for Naomi's good run of late.

Her US Open 30 points along with 12 points here take her to 331 points, currently equivalent to WR 158.

She has a whole net 2 points currently due to come off for the rest of the year ( 10 points in October can be replaced by her best non counter of 8 ).

Add in that the vast majority of her points have been earned since the French Open and she has real chances to move towards her CH 138 and indeed maybe a fair bit higher during the rest of this year and the early months of next year.

Really hope that her recent general play and results continue.

Big opportunity missed. From the stats it looks like either Pegula returned brilliantly, or more likely, Naomi performed poorly on her initial ground-stroke after her serve. With the high number of aces, you'd expect her to win a much higher percentage behind her first serve than 69%. On first serve points that weren't aces she won 20/35. Given that some of those won will have been unreturned first serves, that leaves you with some alarming numbers.

According to the WTA rulebook lucky losers are still done by ranking, so as number 1 seed in qualies Naomi should be in as a lucky loser.

Great news if Naomi's made it in as a LL

And she's playing doubles with Amandine Hesse which I'm sure she'll enjoy....

She did make it in and has drawn Kudryavtseva.

Would have preferred Irigoyen but no complaints about getting a second opportunity.

She nearly beat Kudryavtseva at Edgbaston - 2009 I think (too lazy to check). Let's hope she can go one better this time.

They had an epic encounter at Birmingham a number of years ago, the match where I decided Naomi was going to be my fave British player.
