Naomi went 0-3* down but has just broken back.
For some reason her service seems to have deserted her in the 3rd set, low % 1st serves in, no aces, 2DFs.
Shame for Naomi, a tough draw as No.1 seed and she came through one close match but not the second. Of course if she does get a LL place anyway she will be a lot less disappointed about losing today.
Pity that the serve seemed to go off during the match. But that has been happening much less lately, which I see as much of the reason for Naomi's good run of late.
Her US Open 30 points along with 12 points here take her to 331 points, currently equivalent to WR 158.
She has a whole net 2 points currently due to come off for the rest of the year ( 10 points in October can be replaced by her best non counter of 8 ).
Add in that the vast majority of her points have been earned since the French Open and she has real chances to move towards her CH 138 and indeed maybe a fair bit higher during the rest of this year and the early months of next year.
Really hope that her recent general play and results continue.
Big opportunity missed. From the stats it looks like either Pegula returned brilliantly, or more likely, Naomi performed poorly on her initial ground-stroke after her serve. With the high number of aces, you'd expect her to win a much higher percentage behind her first serve than 69%. On first serve points that weren't aces she won 20/35. Given that some of those won will have been unreturned first serves, that leaves you with some alarming numbers.
