A set that could have gone either way, as Naomi had 6 break points across 3 different games but couldn't convert one (though Ostapenko did play those points well).
Outplayed on the break points in the first set. Ostapenko came up with some great play to save bps while a Naomi df cost her the set. Needs to do better returning 2nd serve.
Super tournament finishes with a very disappointing performance. Shocking returning of the 2nd serve cost her (11 unreturned 2nd serves). Ostapenko played superbly to save all those break points.
I thought Naomi failed to adjust when it became clear Ostapenko was dominating the rallies. Both on her own 2nd serve and returning 2nd serve, Naomi never got the balance right, either making errors or being too passive; personally the passive play annoys me far more than the errors as Naomi's best chance of becoming a top 100 player is by being ultra aggressive. Against Glatch, Naomi hit three 2nd serve aces but she rather allowed Ostapenko to bully her 2nd serve.
Lowest first serve percentage of the week for Naomi 58% and a high number of dfs, given that she didn't appear to be hitting it particularly fast 5/28. Far too many poor ground-strokes into the net. An occasional super backhand but her forehand was desperately poor.

Naomi played a decent match today, but Ostapenko was just a bit better. The 6-4 6-2 scoreline was really harsh on Naomi though as the match was a lot closer than that.
It's been a great week for Naomi and she still has the doubles to come of course.
Sadly Naomi's good run comes to an end. Its easy to see why Ostapenko is rising rapidly up the rankings, I think this match was lost in the first set with Naomi missing a lot of BP chances, even in the last game she missed 3 chances and could have made it more stressful for Ostapenko by taking one of those chances.
Given she got in as a lucky loser its best to look at the positives, she won 3 matches got some good ranking points and a decent pay cheque.
Ms Broady also gained experience of playing on the big stage. That's really important in and of itself. Well done to her: she capitalised brilliantly on her draw and has been doing an excellent job of stringing together wins ... even if it didn't happen today.
