Hope she sends at least a thank you message to whoever withdrew !

Klara Koukalova withdrew to let Naomi into the draw, then Madison Keys' withdrawal opened up the section. However, with coming so close to US Open qualification and the way she has played in general recently, you can't say Naomi hasn't deserved her bit of luck and she has still had to win matches to make it count.

I think it will be a very tough match for Naomi against Ostapenko whose only 18 and rising quickly up the rankings, she came through qualifying at the US Open and won her first round match before losing to Sara Errani in 3 sets.

I just checked, Ostapenko had a junior career high of 2, so she could be quite a handful. However to win she would still have to break through Naomi's serve which has proved a challenge for many better players.

Excellent work Naomi.

Ostapenko is on a pretty steep upward curve - some here might even call her 'under-ranked' - and will be a very serious test.
Best of luck.

Courtney Ngyuen has just conducted an interesting interview with Naomi for WTA.

Thanks for the link. Very interesting and surprising that she hadn't really noticed what a weapon her serve is/could be!

Yeah, great interview. Thanks, insomniacF.

And, yes, it's brilliant that she didn't realise about her serve - I wonder if it was Fitzy who helped pointed it out.

Massive effort from Naomi, but agreed that young Ostapenko will be tough, but she will be nervous also.

I remember Ostapenko at jWimbledon and her serve action and execution was atrocious...however appears to have completely remodelled it since...but one can assume that if Naomi serves well, she can put a lot of pressure on a serve that's surely still a bit dodgy.

Yes very interesting.

Kind of bizarre re some of her service comments. It's been hugely effective for spells, even against very good players, for as long as I can remember, just very inconsistent. One day it would be on, the next off, well even within matches. Big consistent serving has really helped.

It frankly points to poor coaching in the past that hasn't made her more aware of it and worked on having it at a really CONSISTENT level. And yes, she has had historical issues in finding good funding and coaching, unfortunately still to me very much through some OTT counterproductive family stubbornness / so called principle over common sense.

Hopefully, she can still develop the rest of her game, for exciting if she gets results let's be honest, Karlovic is not the type of player that has often been indicated that folk on the forum rush to watch.

But definitely don't be concerned at trying to fully utilise that serve, it's part of tennis. We may not love watching the Karlovics and Isners, but they have achieved a lot as against their overall tennis games, and that's great for them.

Andy by his repeated actions and the words from such as Naomi, simply continues to impress.

I would mind much less watching Isner if he were British and throughly enjoy watching Anderson

What an interesting interview. Such a sensible person - and excellent to hear the words about Mr Murray's support for British players.

Just started looking at the live scores. Miss Broady is a break down.

The break points saved statistic is Broady 0/1 (0%), Ostapenko 6/6 (100%)
