True.  I suppose I just got a bit carried away with the drama of the tie-break! wink

Hey, I'm still well impressed that you had that ready to go, completed the score and sent it before I managed YESSSS !!!!

Congrats to one partnership and commiserations to the other pair. Robert was in pain.

Looking forward to the final now!

What great news to wake up to. So happy for Jamie to see him doing this well. Wimbledon runner's up and now a chance in the US final. Gonna have everything crossed for them in the final. It would be fantastic to see him and John lift the trophy. It really does make you wish that John was British with the upcoming Davis Cup semi final. Ironic really to think they will be on opposite sides of the fence since we play the Aussies. But come on guys this is it now. The chance of Grand Slam victory is there for the taking. Just remember Johnny and Wimbledon. biggrin.gifbiggrin.gifbiggrin.gif

Final :  (8) Jamie Murray & John Peers (AUS) CR 29 (15+14) vs (12) Pierre-Hugues Herbert & Nicolas Mahut (FRA/FRA) CR 44 (21+23)

A final that is both wonderful and a nightmare. I would love Mahut to finally land a big prize and against any team other than one involving a Brit I would be cheering him and PHH on.

It's a fascinating final.  Not only are we guaranteed a fourth diffferent GS winner in 2015 ... and a fourth consecutive pair of first-time GS winners (amazing tribute to the Bryans and a few others - who have shut most players out for years ... and to the current depth of doubles talent). But also ...

  • both teams are in their second GS final of the year. Murray and Peers would clearly like to break through; Mahut desperately wants finally to win one; and PHH, whose illness in Australia was at least partially responsible for their loss, has made no secret of the fact that he desperately wants to make up for that and reward the older player who has "adopted" him as partner.
  • Mahut and Tsonga, of course, lost to Mr Murray senior in London, and Mahut has said that he blames himself for the fact that the French doubles team didn't gel and France was put in a difficult place for the DC (this seems more a comment on his sense of responsibility than on the actuality of the situation)
  • Meanwhile Peers has once again not been picked for the Australian DC squad, despite being their highest-ranked doubles player by far ... a fact that various Australians have pointed out. (I have some sympathy for the Australian captain here - how do you go against picking Hewitt in his last year? And doesn't it feel a bit risky playing Peers against his partner?)

So everyone has something to prove. And a back story. And whatever happens, a good pair will win ... and to my mind, when that's the case, doubles wins. That said, from a GB perspective, there's clearly a desired outcome!

I'm really looking forward to it. As RJA says, it's a win-win thing in many ways - all good GB support for Jamie, of course, but one couldn't be too sad if Nico and PHH won.

And a lot of the doubles fans are no doubt pleased to see proper established doubles teams in the final - none of these jumped-up singles whippersnappers stealing the limelight

NB The French Federation are having a big meeting on Monday - the official report/investigation/audit into the DC team's performance will be presented then, and all actual decisions will be taken then. But I think the writing has been on the wall for Clément since the loss to GB and it's only been protocol (and waiting for Noah to make up his mind, and for the lawyers to see if they can get out of the contract) that's held it up.

Gah, three break points wasted in the first game.

Weird start to this match. J&J won the first three points in a row for 0-40, then lost seven in a row to go 0-40 down, then won five in a row to hold. 1-1.

Two more break points gone at 4-4. Peers missed an absolute sitter at the net. The two are now 0/5 on break points, whilst Mahut and Herbert are 0/4.

Yes. That volley was a real howler. And costly....

Not to be - again:

Final:  (12) Pierre-Hugues Herbert & Nicolas Mahut (FRA/FRA) CR 44 (21+23) defeated (8) Jamie Murray & John Peers (AUS) CR 29 (15+14) by 4 & 4  cry

Short & sweet.  hmm  Not a single one of five break points converted. disbelief

Sadly for us, the better pair won. But Mahut really is a delight.
