Boys: Solymania ITF Junior Tournament, Egypt, clay - Grade 2 (Week 35)

A surfeit of top junior events this week (1 G1 and 3 G2s) making for relatively weak draws. Jay Clarke hopes to take advantage of this one.

R1 (L32)

Mohamed Aboulkassem (EGY) v (2) Jay Clarke

Jay had to battle but he got the win which should take him back into the top 100. His semi-final opponent has played 4 Brits in recent months and come off second best each time, albeit very narrowly in a final set tiebreak in the final of the Copernicus Cup (to Ewan Moore), so Jay will hope to continue the sequence

QF

(2) Jay Clarke d. Kaya Gore (TUR) 4-6 7-6(3) 6-1

SF

(3) Robert Wrzesinski (LTU) v (2) Jay Clarke

Very convincing from Jay reaching his first final at G2 or above level, ensuring Robert's miserable run against Brits continues. Jay is also in the doubles semis.

SF

(2) Jay Clarke d. (3) Robert Wrzesinski (LTU) 6-3 6-1

F

Vlad Andrei Dancu (ROU) or (4) Mikhail Sokolovskiy (RUS) v (2) Jay Clarke

Good luck to Jay in his finals, and (as mentioned in the other thread) in ploughing his own furrow up in Sweden, seemingly minus all LTA help (!):

NB Jay is in both finals, singles and doubles, today - going for the double.

Yes as variously mentioned, the LTA seem to have majorly cut back funding, cut back many tournaments and cut the NTC.

They take away with one hand and seemingly with the other as well !

Good luck to Jay and all these players ( junior and senior ) who are getting on with it and finding a way.

Any success will no doubt be down to "tough love". Grr ...

... or will we soon have some new people on board with different ideas and another different direction ? Who knows, probably not the LTA anyway.

Well said.

THe good news, though, is that Jay won the singles, and easily too.

Final

Jay CLARKE (GBR) [2] def, Vlad Andrei DANCU (ROU) 6-3 6-1

That's 100 points (net 70 extra). And the result of the doubles hasn't even been put up yet.....

And just to round it off, Jay and partner won the doubles too - beating the top seeds.

Final:

Jay CLARKE (GBR) / Kristofer SIIMAR (EST) [2] 7-6(5) 6-1 Mikhail SOKOLOVSKIY (RUS) / Robert WRZESINSKI (LTU) [1]

Although, as Daivd said, points are easier to come by this week, given the large number of high-ranking events spreading the opposition around, the same applies to everyone, of course, so a huge well done to Jay for stepping up and taking advantage.

He should be about WR 75 after this week. And with another G2 event next week, has an excellent chance of going even higher.

Bravo.
