I think it could be fairly said that that could have come out rather better with our 3 non seeded pairs drawing seeds 2, 5 and a couple of young tyros

Aljaz and James are both in the Wawrinka / Murray quarter so, like Andy, won't be in action on Monday.

Horrible, horrible draw for Messrs Fleming and Huey, which neither of them really needed. That said, Fognini and Bolelli lost early in Cincinnati, and with Fognini one never knows quite what one will get. And a terrible draw for Inglot and Linstedt - though, again, it's hard to evaluate where Mr Inglot is, but last week was good, and I have a lot of time for Linstedt as a player. He hasn't reached as many slam finals as he has for nothing! It wouldn't be beyond hope to see an upset or two.

re: the Marray/Daniell v Fritz/Opelka match, Fritz and Opelka have the WC because they won the US national juniors. Fritz was playing injured at the time, so you can't read that much into the match ... but according to Zootennis, they were taken to three by a team that could in no way match their serving power (Opelka's serve - as we saw at Wimbledon - will overwhelm most juniors), but played very good doubles. At a guess, someone with as good a return, as strong a sense of doubles, and as good a net game as Marray, and with quite a decent serve of his own, should be fine if his partner's decent ... but I don't know Daniell at all. And as they haven't (to the best of my knowledge) played much together, they haven't had much time to come together as a team.

Messrs Murray and Peers have the nicest-looking draw you could hope for in the first two rounds - though that's no guarantee of anything ever. Then their 3rd round, were they to reach it, would potentially be tough (that's where they'd meet Marray/Daniell, were that team to go far enough - their seeds are Peya and Soares ... not having their finest year, but still a team no one will want to face). Were they to get beyond that, their quarter isn't bad ... but their SF would be (if seeds hold) the Bryans. Of course, anything can happen.

Yes, I would hope Marray & Daniell would have too much nous for the youngsters. I too know nothing about Daniell other than his ranking, which is not at all shabby.

Yes, re-reading, I feel that what I wrote makes it seem too even. I would, to be honest, expect Mr Marray + partner (unless partner is far worse than his ranking suggests) to have no real issues at all. We are, after all, talking about a GS champion vs two probably future champion but not-yet-there juniors. But one always hesitates to say that ... especially with unknown quantities and the unpredictability that can come in the 1st round.

Marcus Daniell is/ or was based at Bath and used to play a lot of doubles with Richard Gabb, but seems to have stepped up to be a doubles specialist.

His doubles partner seems to be Marcelo Demoliner or Artem Sitak, but doesn't seem to have a regular partner.

That's going to be a huge drop in points for Nishikori, losing in R1 here after making the final last year.

Yes, one can't help but feel for Mr Nishikorii. Not wholly unexpected, though, was it, given M Paire's form and Mr Nishikori's injury issues. Feel for Nieminen, too. Rough draw and a more comprehensive loss than one would like for such an (apparently and by reputation) lovely person in his last Slam. Glad that Fish isn't going gentle into that good night!

Take out Nishikori ( who was anyway just number 5 going into the US Open ) and the next 4 in the ATP Race after Djokovic still in are : Murray, Federer, Wawrinka and Berdych, who are all in the bottom half of the draw.

The Nishikori / Ferrer quarter offers opportunities.

Both James and Aljaz are 2nd on their courts tomorrow with first matches due from 11 am local, 4 pm BST.

Court 7 : Ward vs Bellucci follows men's singles Kudla vs J Melzer

Court 14 : Bedene vs Gulbis follows women's singles Tomljanovic vs Knapp.

Very likely to be on at same time as Robson vs Vesnina, which follows Konta vs Chirico on televised Court 11.

For info, Andy will be a far bit later since he starts the Arthur Ashe night session ( not before midnight BST ).

5 GB singles players on the same day, not at Wimbledon.
