Just looking at in running rankings we have Milton Evans Cox Smethurst Willis and Ward all ranked 300-400. 3 of these have been near or in the top 200. With a bit of luck and no injuries they could all make Aus Open qualies with a good end to the season depending on how well they do this week and next, followed by a bit for Challenger form over the next 3 months.
Dan Smethurst's ultimate 3 points here, taking him to 107 ranking points, will pretty likely take him back into the top 400, meaning 13 Brits in the top 400. Although still "just" 13 Brits in the top 500, indeed probably 13 Brits in the top 550, until we come to Dave Rice and Richard Gabb each on 62 points.
Luke Bambridge is the only other one that is ranked at the moment he's top 300 really just a mix of bad draws and challenger wins for no points in qualifying have stopped him. A few easy 10ks might help.
Dan takes the first set 75 really hoping he can win this tournament and do British tennis a service by moving beyond futures and leaving these points to the rest of them in future

Yes. Haven't seem him play for ages but, on results, he seems like one (and the only one) who could extremely easily have been ranked a few hundred places higher if he'd just won a few key points here and there - so many close losses, so many excellent challenger wins for zero points, as you say.
In the big picture, I think that's all fine but it would be nice to have a little 'déclic', as the French say, a lightbulb moment, where it suddenly falls into place. It seems very close.
I know I'll probably hate myself for saying this one day, but just wondering if the time Dan had out with injury and being unable to play tennis - made him appreciate what a precious and precarious existence a tennis player has; and whether it will ultimately be the thing that makes him.
He'll still lose games he should have won (everyone does) but there is a consistency and a robustness about him the last few months that I can't remember this consistently before. The Pauffley game which I saw this week was a case in point of a game where he could easily have lost but dug deep to win, I really hope (and am starting to believe) that he is finally on the way to fulfilling his talent and leaving Futures tennis behind for good. Really exciting!

Allez Evo!!
And on a connected, but more cynical note, I wonder if the fact that he is no longer heavily subsidised by the LTA/NTC and that his big prize money of a couple of years back will almost certainly have all been spent by now means that he realises that if he wants to earn, he actually has the ability to make some very decent money in tennis, and probably does not have the ability to do that in any other field, so tennis is it.
I'll just wait and see with Dan Evans - he's been so unpredictable in the past about his dedication to the sport that you never know what to expect.
As for Marcus - I've no idea what he is doing regarding scheduling. I see he is not playing Nottingham(unless he asks for a WC) and then he has pulled out of the challenger in Turkey.
