Yeah - at 18 years old and to have the mental capacity to stay in that match given, as was mentioned earlier, how close he came to winning in two, isn't something to be sniffed at. Good luck to the lad - just not against any more of our boys... ;)
I arrived just after the start of the 2nd set. Halys was spraying the ball around and Dan looked comfortable - I thought Dan was going to win the 2nd set with ease. QH tightened up his game and we were into a tiebreak. QH had 5-4 on his serve in the tb but lost both points and Dan was quick to take his chance. The third set was a good standard. Both players complained about line calls, but I guess that is normal for a Futures event. The deciding set remained tight - QH started doing some damage with his fh and hit some monster good passing shots. At 5-6 another tie breaker looked likely, but Dan got off to a dreadful start on his service game and found himself facing 3 match points. He saved two but not the third.
This was the first time I had visited the NTC. It is a super facility, all clean and modern and plenty of staff beavering away at their desks. I was somewhat disappointed to notice that Dan and QH were the only people playing when I arrived - 6 indoor, 5 outdoor and 4 clay courts all empty! I left around 1.00 and some of the indoor courts were being used. There only 15 spectators! This number swelled towards lunchtime when some of NTC staff came to watch during the lunchbreak.
I hope Dan can win some matches in Turkey. Allez!!
wow only 15 spectators for a pro final involving one of the best players in the uk and one of the top up and comming junior. there were easily twice as many people down watching the north east championship semi finals and finals in aberdeen last month. probably at least 50 with most having no connection to either players. Same story for the north east indoors back in january.
Like I said earlier this week it was always going be Halys or whoever beat him. Halys will be playing US Open next year no doubt so the fact Evo could have beat him today is a good sign. Be interesting to see if Evo goes to Nottingham now or France
I have got the impression that the NTC is hardly an obviously welcoming place ( buzz at the gate to get in grounds ? ).
Roll up, roll up and see the possible stars of the future making their way in the game - maybe not.
Inspire a generation - maybe not.

I suppose on the other hand there do have to be some decent security arrangements in place to protect any big names that happen to be practising there - not that I'm suggesting that happens on a regular basis. Some daft health and safety law probably comes into it somewhere too.
It ought to be put to better use as a training academy for coaches, with Tony Pickard invited to give the inaugural speech at its launch (he has six grand slam titles to his credit). They have the overnight facilities as well.
