Players have different psychologies. Laura seemed to play best when she was happy having fun off court, making crazy videos or whatever. If she was happy off court she was happy on court and played well.
I actually admire Heather for attempting to go the more aggressive route, TennisLover, and as you say I can't imagine it can be at all easy, and she spoke earlier in the year about the elements of indecision it can cause.
Even now I think this has to be bound in mind to some extent.
Lose confidence in being more aggressive and I can see how a player might at times revert to more passive plus.
It's frustrating for folk no doubt, especially her !

Oh dear. Just read through the set. I'm glad I wasn't watcing by the sounds of things. Well I hope Hev gets to regroup and get more confidence up for the Asian swing. also hope LAura and Jo do better.
Thanks all for your comments and observations.
Aggressive and offensive play is not something that is easy to come by especially at Heather's stage. Attributes for that style of play has to be nurtured during junior years. It is very difficult to develop the mental fortitude to apply it on a consistent basis at the top professional level without reverting back to type.
it's all true, but it can be done. Simona Halep stagnated or even went backwards as she attempted to add much more power and aggression to a honed defensive game. It took more than 12 months for the payback to come, but the results have been spectacular. I missed today's match - sounds like I lucked out.
Very confident that Jo will continue to play well and overcome her opponent tomorrow.
I'll leave all commentary on Laura for others.......going to be tough to resist........be strong Korriban!
I didn't see Heather's match as quite 100% awful as the rest of you. I felt during the first 5-6 games she played extremely well and with the intensity we saw against Williams, as result going 40 love up on Lauren"s serve. But, once those break points had been saved by her opponent's good play, I could see her confidence evaporate and the doubts as to how to play come flooding in. Had she taken one of them I think she would have motored through the match without a wobble. As it was, having reverted to a passive defensive style she still felt unsettled as she knew it wasn't how she intended to play and when she tried to get more aggressive it was too forced and thus resulted in errors. However, she still stuck around hanging in however she could to give herself a chance to recover, making for a close score line.
Lots of poor play and errors admittedly, but I also saw good things.....
So disappointed for Heather :(
That was a match which she no doubt will feel she could and should have won; every time she got the upper hand she seemed to hand the momentum back too easily. Hey ho :(
Glad to hear get your helpful analysis, Optimist. She's a sensible woman, Ms Watson; hope that she will take from all this what she needs and come back (as is her wont) fighting.
Hoping for good results today for Ms Robson and Ms Konta.
"I was thinking a lot about this match, thinking that it was a big opportunity and about the previous years and my results here.
Maybe I thought about that a bit too much."
Yes, thinking too much can be a bad thing ..
Also said that she didn't really execute her game plan. Yes, kinda guessed that. It serms to be partly / largely the not coming naturally and possibly over thinking and second guessing herself during matches, which is too much going on ...

Jo about to start - looking forward to this one, as Jo is the one of the three Brits in the women's draw we were most expecting a good performance from so let's hope that is the case.
