It's interesting that all the fuss around the top half of the draw has obscured the fact that the bottom half is likely to have quite a spectacular SF: Kvitova, Azarenka and Halep all still in.
And in that bottom half SF Flavia Pennnetta has beaten Simona Halep 6-1 6-3. Yes, I didn't see her coming through either.
3 left including 2 Italians, though Serena has taken the first set vs Roberta Vinci 6-2

Great for Pennetta, not so great for chances of a good match in the final - we have had Serena v unlikely first time finalist at Roland Garros and Wimbledon so I was hoping for a clash of two of the big names in the U.S. open final
Glad I wasn't the only one who didn't see that coming. Enjoyed the jokes flying around about the people who might find themselves having paid enormous sums of money to see the first ever all-Italian GS final. (Don't really see that happening, though)
Hmmm. They were not jokes. Astounding. Wow. Gracious. What can one say? Well done to Ms Vinci - commiserations to Ms Williams. Buona fortuna to the two finalists!
If you didn't get a chance to hear Roberta Vinci's on-court interview, see if you can find a recording. It is absolutely priceless - charming, unguarded, emotional and very funny.
What a shock but clearly the nerves got to Serena and Vinci played well. Serena has been quite lucky to have won all 3 slams so far with some unconvincing performances and many opponents who fell apart when they could have beaten her.
Its an unlikely final to say the least and the American crowd might be somewhat muted but it goes to show that nothing is a certainty in sport and tennis and that's why we love it. This reminds me of last year in the Mens Singles where people were expecting Djokovic v Federer and they both lost.
Yup, here it is. I've followed Vinci for about a decade and never thought I'd see the day where she reached such heights. And she's a lovely woman to boot.
Please can someone who saw the Serena match tell me if Serena bottled it or Vinci played a blinder.
Serena was very very tight, somewhat similar to how she played against Hev at Wimby, but Vinci was outstanding in particular as she got close to the finishing line.
