RE: Week 35 - US Open Singles Main Draw - Hard

At my cousin's wedding today so not able to follow closely... But just wanted to say another massive well done to Jo!

The best thing about Jo's run here is that it hasn't come out of nowhere but has been a progression throughout the year, and so it is fully deserved.

Next round will be all about which Petra turns up, but can be pretty sure Jo won't give up without a fight.

Anyone see the article in today's Telegraph about Jo?

Effectively claiming that the large cut in funding and the move to Valencia have had a big influence on results.

I'm guessing just Kyle is now getting full LTA funding( or has that been cut?)

Amazing from Jo. Super excited for Monday when I'll be landing into NYC. Now wondering whether I should've bought Women's QF's instead of Men's! :)

I assume that the women's QFs are mixed with the men's ( and not even half a round out of kilter this year as in past US Opens ) so you could strike lucky if Jo's still in ( how great would that be ! )

Otherwise, if you'ed like to see another session, you could try maybe just turning up ( or check online - don't know what facilties they have ? )

I just went on spec at the start of the second week and got tickets into Ashe no bother day and night a few years ago ( saw Andy demolish Stan in the last 16 at night - now that would be nice again this year ! )

Enjoy !

Thanks for the tip, Indie! I have to work during the day but you never know what might happen if Jo is still in...

*cough cough splutter cough*

I'm idly wondering when the last time was that Andy entered a GS, and was not last Brit standing in singles? It must be an absolute age!
Good to see Jo keeping him on his toes

Yep, saw it and frankly, I am not surprised vis-a-vis getting away from the grip of the LTA and making enormous progress.

I would guess when Laura beat Clijsters and Li Na before losing to Stosur in the last 16 of the US Open.

That run is partly why as well as Jo has been doing ( superb ! ) I think there is still a debate to be had as to whether she is playing better than Laura at her best. Probably yes in terms of this extended period, but let's not forget how good Laura not too long ago was at her best and with other results apart from that run.

I think Juan Coto and Estaban Carill should get a special mention in the Honours List. Or win foreign Sports Personality of the Year. Or get Papal dispensation to be 'sainted' whilst still alive. Nothing could be too big.

And the LTA get zero credit.

It's another terrible indictment of what was going on at the NTC.

The wording from the LTA at the time of the big NTC pull out seemed to not very discreetly blame player attitudes.

I always tended to think culture and the related attitudes that that helped spawn came from the top.

Coaching levels, yes they have acknowledged and seek to address, but the culture and atmosphere appeared poor ( and we've had one or two on-site observations )

At the bottom of the article it claims that only four people now get direct funding: Laura, Kyle, Liam and Katie Swan.

SO SO brave, of course, of the LTA to give direct funding to someone who's already earned over 1.2 million in direct prize money (i.e. not counting spin-offs).

Just four players. Brilliant. Probably takes umpteen comfortable committee meetings to sort that out. And don't worry about the salaries, per diems and expense chits . . . not a problem....

I had to leave just as Jo won the first set. So pleased to see she won the match - and in straights, too. Very well done!

What another brilliant effort by Jo. For the 1st time she had nerves, but she overcame them !!! Helped a little by an out of sorts Petko, but it would be really unfair to take anything away from this win based on that.

Next match will be very tough and probably a step too far, but who cares she's heading towards the top 50 if she stays fit and the new GB number 1. Judy has said she's gobsmacked at Jo's improvement over the last 6 months, and she's not the only one. FANTASTIC stuff.

But that was 2012, when Andy won uSO, and so was definitely last Brit standing.
I think in the 2008 Aussie open, Andy went outin the same round as Jamie Baker (R1), but Andy played after Jamie, and as none of our ladies played MD, Andy was still last Brit standing.

So, astonishingly, I think it's the 2006 French Open, where Andy went out in R1, and Tim went out in R2, that was the last time Andy was not 'last Brit standing'!
