Good win for Kyle Edmund, and he plays Nishioka who he beat a few weeks back. If I remember rightly Nishioka had a bit of a meltdown the last time they met so will be very determined to get the win. I expect Kyle to win that match and hopefully get some luck with where hes placed in the main draw.
Importantly he's now around 85 in the race rankings and with little to defend in terms of points he should hopefully cement his place in the top 80.

Looks like Nishikoras hand has heeled up but hopeful Kyle did a bit of psychological damage in Aptos despite playing badly. If Kyle can take the first set the pressures really on, if he looses it he knows he is well capable of bringing it back.
One more win and hopefully Kyle will be done with having to qualify for GS MD. I mean his progress through qualifying got a paragraph in both the Sun and the Gruniard today, now that's progress,

Of course, the "race" takes no account of points still to be defended this year. It purely ranks players on their season so far. So if Kyle is running at number 85, all things being equal he is heading towards end of season WR 85 ( that he has little to defend is reflected in his race position being a fair bit better than his official ranking position ).
But if he can continue in good form and pick up a fair few more points than at least 5 of those a bit ahead of him in the race then he could finish the season in the top 80.

I think we would all be disappointed if Kyle wasn't top 80 as he is only going in one direction. My prediction that Brydan would finish above Ward is looking like it might happen also think I was the only one seeing that.
Kyle's going great guns, I agree this will probably be the last GS he has to qualify for. Brydan's form impressive too, he seems to have his mojo at the moment.
Shame about Liam but I think he will come again. James does seem to be struggling, and has a tough draw is the USO so another zero pointer is a strong possibility.
But yes, Jaggy, it looks exceedingly likely that Kyle will finish the season ahead of James, so well done you.
Oh and just confirmed my thoughts that I too predicted Kyle to finish ahead of James, so well done me too if we both end up right. And well done too in that event to anyone else you've missed ( edit : would help if I read stuff properly since Jaggy has clearly talked about his prediction of err Brydan, rather than Kyle, finishing ahead of James, and I haven't predicted that ! Sorry and seriously well done mate iff and when that comes off as it may well do or may not do. Moving swiftly on ... )
Re Kyle's race situation I was just pointing out for the avoidance of doubt that points defences are irrelevant to the race. If he is currently number 85 ( and increasingly it seems beware live-tennis.eu which rather novelly currently has Kyle and others with rather less race points than they had on Monday ), higher or lower, all the players above him will have scored more points this season so far so aren't doing too shabbily.
Yes, Kyle is generally certainly continuing on an upward trajectory and isn't that far in points off the top 80 in the race, actually maybe very close.
But if he didn't rise higher in the race but "just" stabilised to end the season ranked in the mid 80s I can't say that I'd personally be particularly disappointed at all. It would have been a season of further big progression.
But could he finish top 80 ? Sure. And the higher the better
