Emily Appleton doesn't turn 16 until next week and is a set and a break up on Beth and looks set to pick up a 6th ranking point(second scorer)

Unsurprisingly Laura D lost the first set 6-0 and is 4-2 down in the second.

So Nicholls beat Aimee to qualify, pulled out and was replaced by her?

Yes. It seems so. And seems weird that Olivia would not even give the match a go (does she still get her ranking point for qualifying?). Although, if she's injured, then there's no real point of just turning up, of course.

Strange.

On the positive side I assume Aimee gets a ranking point for competing in R1, i.e. the point that everyone, including WCs, generally gets for competing in R1 of a 25K, not the additional point that qualifiers would get if they won their R1 match.

If so, that will preserve Aimee's ranking as she will now retain at least 3 counters ( into next year indeed ). She had been due to go down to 2 counters after the US Open.

PS : I'm not sure if Olivia gets a point, CD. I am guessing, perhaps ironically, no.

I hope we are not hinted that Olivia deliberately let Aimee in for the points - people get banned for that  smile

However would it be cost effective for Olivia to stay given her draw against a seeded player? The increase in prize money from final qualifying to 1st round loser won't even cover an extra night stay.

Lisa is just starting against the second seed.

Neither Olivia nor Aimee get a point for their troubles.

Lucky losers who lose r1 get r1 prize money but FQR points (zero). Qualifiers who pull out before playing round one get FQR prize money and points.

Christie's been in really good form recently, but de Vroome is going to be a real step up. Fascinated to see if she can at least keep it close.

The ITF live tennis centre has Lisa losing and then appearing in R2 of the draw, anyone know which is right?

I'm surprised if that's the case with Aimee  I was making the distinction between the qualifying point from winning the FQR which gets added at the R2 stage, and which I didn't see her getting, and the point for just competing in R1 which I thought all R1 competitors would get.

i.e. that her in theory points progression were 1, 5, 9 ..  ( the standard 25K points ) rather than 1, 6, 10 .... ( what a FQR winner would get ). So, if it was 0, 5, 9, . ( I assume that's the implication ) then I'm wrong ( not for the first time ! ) and a LL is unusually getting less than a standard R1 entrant. But I'm not convinced.

Only three British women through to the second round....

And only one of those actually beat a non-British player.....

Why has the LTA put on so many 25 and 50ks when we patently do not have the level to support them?

NB In the dubs, first round victories for:

Katy/Harriet

Serena/Camille

Em Arb/Freya

and Megan/Lily get a walkover through...

The singles girls play the 1st, 2nd and 3rd seeds tomorrow - here's hoping for some big upsets - although it won't change the initial comment....

Should get Freya up to a new CH of roughly WR 722

(Freya, I've got you as the GB no. 10 in the top 500 for the end of the year, so a little effort please, pretty please)

Nice for Em App too, of course - two counters and 6 points in total.....AND with all those A* GCSEs in her pocket too

Ah ... so just the 1, 2, and 3 seeds to beat then ...

Well done to the three R2 women - and all the best. Nothing is impossible!
