It's a common theme among players lacking match practice to act like a rabbit in headlights when the momentum goes against them, and also to struggle with closing out a match and we saw both of those from Laura today.
She did well to get the win, or really struggled against a much weaker opponent depending on how you look at it. Without knowing anything really about Alexa Graham it's hard to judge this one.
If Laura plays McHale tomorrow I expect her to struggle, but McHale and Gasparyan play tomorrow morning and again v Laura later. A long morning match could open the door for Laura
Be interesting to see how Laura's next match against a no doubt much stronger opponent pans out.
This one at times doesn't seem to have been good, but many of us still have limited expectations at this stage and I think that Tony makes some very good points.
Situations encountered, match won, and another match now ...
I guess this is where the coach earns their keep - hopefully he'll have framed this as a good win, and great fighting spirit to come back in the third set.
Thanks kundalini for the match report. It sounds like a stressy second set to follow.
Well, it was scrappy, but on the comeback trail I'll take it. I'm sure if that improves her ranking significantly?
Hopefully she'll benefit lots from the matchplay and fight and be able to take the positives into the next one.
13 ranking points for a Q1 win here takes Laura up to 34 points, in between Fran on 35 and Katie Swan on 33 and now once again GB's top ranked Laura. Should be about WR 610.
Much bigger picture for Laura, of course, but still nice to get her ranking moving up.
And will get a 10 point starter with her PR entry at the US Open.
