Nice to see a lot of unraked players get a point

Unraked and unseeded ... but making hay while the sun shines. (Sorry, couldn't resist)

And yes, I agree with the sentiment!

Not saying I'd disagree about it as any sort of policy though I kinda wonder, ( and it's not the LTA / organisers' fault that the ranking system offers such freebies ), but in general, paulisi, do you think WCs should be given out to get players on / back on the ranking list ?

It would indeed have that effect for Emily ( Arbuthnott - too many Emily's ) and again I wouldn't necessarily disagree with a WC, irrespective of rankings, with her win today and maybe more to come.

It depends on the circumstances. In this case, Emily Arbuthnot did have a ranking, but very rarely used it, so it would not be beneficial.

If a junior was awarded it with the intention of playing regularly on the main tour, then fair enough.

I believe Lisa Whybourn's win also gets her back on the ranking list with a third scorer, although she can use her PR if she requires.

I'll predict a couple more upsets in end 2.
Lucy Brown, Manisha and Georgina to win or at least push to a third set.

Rather surreal moment, checked my Facebook newsfeed to see a post from a girl I went to school with which was of the Chiswick tournament - it turns out she's the tournament director this year...

Anyway that moment aside, I'm concerned about Naomi. She's not had much luck since retiring from her matches in Sharm back in May, which does make me wonder if there is a nagging injury?

Play is well under way:

Helen 5-5* Miyazaki
Jasmine 1-6 1-0* Emily Arb.
Georgina 4-6 2-0* Beth
Jodie 6-1 *1-1 Ellie-Rose

The fact that the British girls have managed to knock out all but one of the non-Brits makes me think that at that end of the rankings, the Brits are seriously under ranked the problem is they don't have any home tournaments to travel around to like in Egypt, Turkey, Tunisia etc, where the girls are clawing loads of ranking points up (like Mirabelle has been), without necessarily playing as hard opponents.

They really need to get more of these 10k's to ensure that our girls can get rankings - and make it worthwhile travelling abroad, without having to go through 2 or 3 rounds of qualifying before they even earn a ranking point.
