RE: Week 32 - ATP 1000 - Coupe Rogers, Montréal, Canada (hard) - doubles

Are the byes in dubs a result of court space / scheduling issues given the singles are a 64 draw?

Good point.

Yes, I'd thought of that. But there seems to be some spare capacity in some of the outer courts.

We're just talking 8 doubles matches with MTBs.

And without checking, isn't the 24 pair draw with R1 byes pretty standard format in Masters, presumably excepting Indian Wells and Miami ?

Looks like a pretty competitive match...! wink

I didn't really read watching the LS that way, more like when Venus and Serena first played, abit lack lustre with neither really wanting to upset the other. I'm hoping we'll find out more in the press.

Whatever / however, with Jamie & John already at CHs, that's 180 ranking points so far to replace a 0 from Cincinnati in the same week last year.

PS : those current CHs for Jamie and John are 16 and 15 respectively, and Andy and Leander are WR 288 and WR 33.

I would have been shocked about any other result, happy to see though it was competitive.

Tough one all around. The only person who didn't need the points was the junior Mr Murray. Sounds like a decent match - and good luck to Messrs Murray and Peers in the next round.

Good. Andy needs his energy for singles, and the established doubles pair go on. A bit of a shame for Paes but when he chose to enter with a high-ranked singles player, he must have realised the risk.

I was wondering why so many of the top guys were playing doubles here? Andy, Novak and Rafa

Makes sense & the comments of both men reported by the Beeb would seem to bear that out.  When I typed that, I'd been doing nothing more than keep an occasional eye on the score while I was watching the TV.

I've just read your link, and it does seem to be the case. It's kind of a shame, but had to happen sooner or later. I'm glad it was this way around, and neither of them gunning for the other. Hopefully it won't happen again.

Hats off to the William's though. How they did it and yet remain seemingly a close family I have no clue.
