I always wondered whether we counted 100 as breaking the the top 100 that's what I had worked him out to be at now but if it's 99 regardless then that's that even better.
I "replied" to this hours ago but must have forgotten to press submit - too much on my mind. I see Indie has answered it. Just to add my twopennorth - if you don't include #100 in the top hundred, then there are only 99 players in the top 100 as there is no #0!
Top 100 bothered? Still taking the Vicki Pollard stance.
I just don't see it being particularly relevant to where Kyle will be playing his tennis for most of his career. Poor first set, ground his way back in the second really hit the ground running in the third and watched his opponent fragment, someone needs to explain to Nishikora the concept of adding more punch to your shots. He appears to have got the wrong idea.
Kyle is likely to play Nishikora many times over the next decade and inflicted a significant long term pyschogical blow yesterday, that will serve him well in the future. Cruising through early rounds of tournaments by better players is not only down to the capacity to change gear but also the mind set of opponents, if they start expecting to loose pressing home an unexpected advantage becomes a real challenge in the face of any suggestion of a comeback due to lack of belief.
Undoubtedly Kyles game will continue to improve for the next 7-8 years but to stay in yesterday's match showed phenomenal mental strength that will serve him well. Licking my lips at the prospects of tonight's clash with the milkman.
I consider Kyle's pedigree to be gold top and most milkman deliver the skimmed variety these days. Here's hoping the cream rises to the top!
Regarding his ranking, the best online live resource (IMO) (onedrive.live.com/view.aspx%27ATP%20Rankings%27!G6) says he would be up to 99 in running if he reached the semis. Of course, there would be a host of players who could overtake still (Youzhny with one win, Munoz de la Nava and Taro Daniel with 2, and Struff with 4).
So, even though I don't think him reaching the top 100 is a big deal in the longer term, it would be a lineball outcome if he made the semis here. Of course, his overall upward trend in performance is the more important thing, but would be great to see another Brit make the top 100 this year.
This was one live site mentioned earlier and it agrees that Kyle is WR 99 in running AND that now only one player can overtake him, Bjorn Fratangelo, another Aptos semi finalist.
Kyle's top 100 place appears to have been secured by Taro Daniel losing out to John Millman in the Aptos quarter finals.

Not any more he can't, as he bows out at the semi final stage meaning Kyle will be 99 or better on Monday,
Oh, drat - broken first game of the second set. I'm off to bed, I'll follow it up there, but I won't be posting. I can't cope with typing on a tablet, it takes me so long I miss all the tennis.
The good thing is, if Kyle loses there is a consolation prize awaiting. Even if he fails to get the cream off the milkman tonight, he can look forward to a nice 99 with a flake on Monday. Win-win
